Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Edit login component

    I want to add a field to the login component of an application.

    Basically, I want to add a checkbox asking if the user would like to use the mobile version of the app, or the regular browser version.

    But the default login component does not appear to led itself to a lot of editing.

    Is it possible to do what I want to do?

    Yes but you might find it easier to make the page the login page sends visitors to an alternate pitstop page where they can select by use of a check box what page the user will be directed to next.
    An alternative would be to use responsive layouts, but for me they were too complicated to setup exactly.
    I found it better to put everything in a tabbedui and let the user pick by button if they wanted a mobile friendly version of the same grid which is really a UX that works on percentages.
    I also find that data entry is easiest with a keyboard at a desktop via a detail view in a grid and that reviewing and minor data entry is best via a UX.

    good luck, don't let my practices limit you!

      Re: Edit login component

      This site will be visited by people from all over, using many, many different devices. A responsive layout may be appropriate in some places, but with endless possibilities, I don't want to make things too complicated.

      I am trying to avoid a pitstop page. I don't want them to have to login, then make another selection afterwards if I can avoid it.

      I DO have a link on the index page where they can change their screen after they login. They can also setup their default login so that it will always be mobile or always be browser. New users can also select their default on registration and change their default any time.

      It would just be nice to give them a choice on login to override their default setting.

        Re: Edit login component

        login component automatically creates an a5w page. if you edit that page and add button and onClick would you be able to go to the mobile page?
        or as google does, detect the browser and add a javascript code to ask them to if they want to go to mobile version.

        larry, this is just a thought process if it does not work, i can play with it and see how it works.

          Larry - what if:

          The Login component Layout property has an option for Freeform layout. So, use that, and add in your own construct for whatever selector you might want. Add an OnChange or Onclick event handler -- whatever's appropriate -- that runs the A5.ajax.callback() javascript function.

          The syntax is:

          A5.ajax.callback(url,data)

          Here's an example I use, not on an onclick() event but within other javascript:

          Code:
          A5.ajax.callback('A5Callbacks.a5w','__action=CtResp&count='+$gvs('click_counter'));
          Then, on the A5Callbacks.a5w page, I have this:

          Code:
          if eval_valid("__action") = .f.
          	goto fEnd
          end if

          if __action = "CtResp"
          	Observer_Recorder(session.observation_id, count)
          end if
          . . .

            Re: Edit login component

            Another option is to create a new UX and in the afterDialogValidate event add a call to the function a5ws_Login_User(user_name,password), which will log the user in. The only problem with this is you don't have access to the forgot your password section from the default login component.

              Re: Edit login component

              I've got a new made up radio button control in the freeform section now, but I'm not sure how to add an event to it.

              I think if I got that part, I could do the ajax callback as Steve suggested. I've got it looking good, I just don't now how to make it do something!

              I have added this code to the freeform section:

              Code:
                  <tr>
                    <td class="GrGrayGridDataHeader">Select Menu Type (optional)</td>
                  </tr>
                  <tr>
                    <td class="GrGrayGridData"><input type="radio" name="menu" value="Regular">Regular
              <input type="radio" name="menu" value="Mobile">Mobile<br></td>
                  </tr>

                Re: Edit login component

                Thanks everyone for your help.

                I got it figured out.

                After adding the checkbox to the login component, I was able to reference the value of the component by name elsewhere on the page.

                So, above the login component in the login.a5w page, where I already had script getting the userID into a session variable, I added the script:

                Code:
                        if menu = "Mobile" then
                		session.sMobile = "true"
                		else
                		session.sMobile = "false"
                	end if
                It worked great!

                I didn't need javascript or anything else.
