Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Use Expression & Session Variable as Default Value?

I have a component for a fire department database which allows the Admins to setup new User Names and Passwords. In the User Name field they enter the user's "ID Number," which must be prefixed by the fire company the user is assigned to. (Ex. 49-12345, where "49" is the fire company number.)

In the default value field for the User Name, I want the field to be filled in automatically by the Admin User's assigned fire company. At the moment I have the following listed in the default value field: session.__protected__Firecompany_No
and it works fine, but I want the "dash" to follow it.

If I use session.__protected__Firecompany_No-
I get the following as my default value: 49 -

In other words, it is putting a space between the Fire Company No and the "-"

I tried using "trim" or "alltrim" to get rid of it, but it didn't work. Is there any way to remove that space between the session variable and the static "dash" using an expression of some sort? Or maybe some other way to get rid of it?

Hi Richard,

Are you sure you don't have a blank space in the session variable

I use this in a similar way in my application. In the default value for a field, have you tried using =session.__protected__Firecompany_No + "-"
This works for me, there are also other way's you to do it. Normally I do a lot of this in a serverside event or in function defined in the component. But give the above a try.

If you have a blank space in the session variable, then try this etc. =alltrim(session.__protected__Firecompany_No)+"-"
Kind regards

Hi David, and thanks for the quick reply. I hadn't thought about their being a space in the session variable, but upon checking it doesn't appear so. Here's what I have:

dim session.__protected__repagency as c

if eval_valid("session.__protected__Firelink")
if session.__protected__Firelink <> ""
session.__protected__Repagency = lookupc("F",alltrim(session.__protected__Firelink),"Repagency","[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\member_info","Firelink")
session.__protected__firstname = lookupc("F",alltrim(session.__protected__Firelink),"firstname","[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\member_info","Firelink")
session.__protected__lastname = lookupc("F",alltrim(session.__protected__Firelink),"lastname","[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\member_info","Firelink")
session.__protected__systemid = lookupc("F",alltrim(session.__protected__Firelink),"systemid","[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\member_info","Firelink")
session.__protected__Firecompany_No= lookupc("F",alltrim(session.__protected__Firelink),"Firecompany_No","[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\member_info","Firelink")
end if
end if

The Fire Company Number is the last one. Does anything look like it would cause a "space" to you?

Thanks,
Rich

Re: Use Expression & Session Variable as Default Value?

Hi Richard,

No your xbasic script for storing the session seems to be ok. I also figured that you were getting the company_no from a SQL of DBF database. I you want to be completely sure that there isn't a blank space, you should check the raw data in the database. Since you are using dbf, it should be very easy to do in the alpha development software.
You could also use the alltrim function before you store the value from the dbf in the session. But if you are using this session other places in your application, then this could break something if you expect blank spaces in other cases. But for testing your could try this below line (Just for testing).
Code:
session.__protected__Firecompany_No= alltrim(lookupc("F",alltrim(session.__protected__Firelink),"Firecompany_No","[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\member_info","Firelink"))
Did you try out the two solutions that I posted, didn't they work.
Kind regards

Thanks David.

Actually I did try the solution you posted before I created the Message Board message, but apparently I did something wrong, because I copied your expression and used it in my default value, and now it works perfectly.

Not sure what the difference was between mine and yours', but it's working exactly as I wanted it now, so Thank You very much, and thanks for taking the time to help me.

Hi Richard,

Glad I could help, and that it's working now.
I think there must be a blank space in your session variable, and it must be stored in your database table also.
Kind regards

Rich,

FYI: since v11 you no longer need to use the session.__protected__*. All session variables are automatically protected by default.
