Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Opening multiple instances of a grid component in a tabbed UI

My client has asked for the ability to open a sales search form in multiple tabs so that he can do side-by-side searches and bounce back and forth between the tabs. By default the Tabbed UI sets the focus to the open pane once you have opened a component in a tabbed panel. Is there a way to override this behavior to allow the tabbed UI to open a second, third, fourth etc pane of my Sales Grid to allow for several simultaneous searches to be open into the sales history file? I've searched the tabbed UI properties as well as the message board for any kind of property that would change this behavior to no avail.

I know I could always have the client open a second browser tab and run two completely separate instances of the application but I'm trying to cut down on session overhead on the server if possible.

Re: Opening multiple instances of a grid component in a tabbed UI

I asked Selwyn directly about this and got the answer that while it is not possible from the TabbedUI via a property. However he gave me a code workaround via a video he created that allows it to work. Basically it entails copying the JavaScript associated with the button that opens the grid (by viewing the Xbasic code from the TabbedUI), modifying it to randomly create a new alias each time [I appended Math.floor(Math.random()*10000)] and placing the modified JavaScript in a function which you then call from a regular button on the TabbedUI. Works perfectly!

Once again proving the point that Alpha Software has the most accessible and responsive support I've encountered in my thirty plus years of programming!

You can have two buttons. I have People1 and People2 so users can be working on one contact in People1 but if the phone rings they can deal with that inquiry in People2. Note that these are UXs but I am guessing this will work for grids also.

Re: Opening multiple instances of a grid component in a tabbed UI

I am using the multiple button approach in my admin app. Every button opens the same grid with some override settings that allows me to have a tab customers, a tab customers with outstanding invoices etc. Works real great.

Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand

Re: Opening multiple instances of a grid component in a tabbed UI

Thanks for the input everyone. I've made the modification to my application per Selwyn's instructions so that the Sales button opens a new tab each time it is clicked and the script randomly assigns a different alias to each grid that opens. Selwyn mentioned that this may be a property that gets added to the TabbedUI button control in the future (Open Multiple copies).

Re: Opening multiple instances of a grid component in a tabbed UI

Brad, I've been searching for the reference video Selwyn made to no avail. Could you provide a link? Or if possible post the code the open multiple instances of the same grid in a TabbedUI. Frank, I'd like to understand your method if you don't mind posting the code. For that matter, I'm all ears too anyones method for opening multiple instances of a grid or UX in a TabbedUI or mobile tabbed panel. Thanks.
