Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Using the Developer when internet is down

I have poor internet. It sometimes goes down. When this happens my Alpha Developer starts acting up. Opening/closing projects and starting the developer app server take forever. I can reproduce this easily by unplugging my router.

    This can't be normal...can it??

That is normal behavior since they (AS) added license confirmation almost a year ago.

At times, you will even get a message box telling you your license is not valid, or words to the effect.

It is annoying, and concerning... but is true with other applications (Like Sage Peachtree), too.

What do you mean by 'poor'internet'? The speed? Poor setup? Via cable? Via phone? Via Internet? There are a lot of factors which determine internet quality and we have no clue what factors govern yours. Without that information and the fact you live on planet Earth, yes, it's normal. We also have no idea what you mean by, "Alpha starts acting up"? It's like saying, "my child is acting up, what should I do?

What makes you think it's a license issue? Not trying to be smart but unless more information is provided.......

I had great issues when the new licensing was added months back. I could not even work in Alpha proper for two days at one point while they fixed the issue that spanned many users.

Since they installed a script (.net) that checks your license when opening Alpha, on my notebook, if I drift out of the range of my WiFi, Alpha Five stalls when opening (Prior to me opening my app).

When this occurs, the status bar shows "Checking License" until I move back into range. Alpha Five stalls, sometimes with a large white box, and acts "irratically".

Hope that helps to give you a better understanding of what happens occasionally with Alpha Five.

To be further clear, I've been using just about every version of Alpha Four/Five for 26 years, and this only started in the past 10 months ago. And, yes, it happens on my business partners machine occasionally in another building, on another notebook, on another network with the runtime, too. His Surface, too.

Sometimes, you even get a license not valid message instructing you to call to get a license, which is sad since I pay a monthly fee every month for the software.

In closure, I never said it was a license issue, persay. I thought I indicated (perhaps unsuccessfully) it is a checking license issue. It cannot contact the clearinghouse, so it stalls.

Please feel free to search the board, as this has been reported before. It was said by one user it was to be fixed a few versions ago, but even after a full uninstall/re-install, it still happens. (Not when hard wired, just WiFi weak spots)

Because my apps are designed to run on tablets, I have a function that runs on every button and can save event that uses "file_exists()" to make sure the device is online BEFORE the app script continues, which keeps the user from experiencing white boxes and irratic bahavior. A message box pops up say "You are not connected to the network, please resolve the issue and try again. I do not believe the .NET script does this on the AS side. See picture.

          Hope that helps, Kenn.

            More small points:

It doesn't happen often, to me. About once every two weeks, during which time I open Alpha dozens of times. It may be that it only occurs when the last completed/succesful online test happened so many days, or openings ago.

I would submit it probably only occurs when the signal is weak. I know my routine when it happens is to open IE and see if I can get to Google. The answer is usually 'No'. I close A5 with task manager, take 5 steps closer to the access point, and then it opens fine, and I can get to Google.

I then relocate to the original position in the room, and everything is fine from that point forward.

Hope that helps, and that the other poster can confirm my analysis.

Re: Using the Developer when internet is down

This has been fixed in the lastest pre-release. The problem occurred if you were on a network, but the network didn't have an Internet connection. Alpha Anywhere would start very slowly ( 30 seconds +), and then remain very slow switching tabs, etc. This only occurred in the last 2 release builds, and did not occur if you were not on a network.

What you will see in the latest pre-release in this condition is a relatively slow startup (10-15 seconds), but once the program starts, it will run normally.

We are still investigating methods to address the slow startup that is reliable in all operating systems.

Re: Using the Developer when internet is down

I can verify what Mike and Chris have stated. At least with the current release. I had my ISP go down and the only way to get anything accomplished was by unplugging the network cable on my machine. Plug it back and immediately the control panel becomes unresponsive and every time a function is opened for editing Alpha again tries to connect to the internet to check the license and the whole A5 IDE comes to a screeching halt for several seconds to more than a minute. Once A5 figures out is can't connect it allows you to continue until you try to do anything like edit something and then it starts the whole process over again. I could repeat it at will.

Very, very, annoying, to say the least, for a license that is supposed to be perpetual. As Jerry has stated. This doesn't occur in the latest pre-release. It is much, much better.

                    Thank you Jerry.

Ken, I live in a very rural area and sometimes my internet just goes out completely. This makes the developer run very very slow. As Jerry pointed out this is now fixed.

                        Hi

I believe this problem has returned in version 12.4.3.1. I was traveling a month ago with the previous release and had no issues running the developer version in airplane mode. Last week I finally upgraded to the latest build and today I was fly with no Internet and developer would start but then sit there none responsive. After about 3 minutes it would let into the database I could work for about two minutes then back to non responsive. On my layover I had Internet and it worked fine. My next flight, which I'm currently on, I started in flight mode and same problem. This time I was able to get GOGO and Internet and once connected, restarted alpha and it works fine. I travel and do development when I travel, this really needs to be fixed.

I'm sending this in as a bug also.
