Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    set value in repeating section with xbasic

    this sets the value to a UNBOUND control in a UX repeating section (row5) to 55

    Code:
    e._set.myCtl_A5INSTANCE5.value = 55
    i have tried different approaches in order to make it work within a loop but sill with no results. let's say that I want to set the value of the UNBOUND control (myCtl) to 26 in the first 3 rows

    Code:
    for i = 1 to 3
    eval("e._set.myCtl_A5INSTANCE"+i) = 26
    next
    This doesnt work . any thoughts on how to do it ?

    Are you doing this in an ajax callback? Or one of the server-side events?

      Hi Sarah,

      just experimenting with an onclick event of a button, before I put it on a server side event , probably "dialogValidate", so that those controls values are filled in right after the UX component is opened

        He's doing this in an ajax callback... e._set doesn't exist in an event.

        I believe you're just missing the .value part in your loop.

        For onDialogValidate the code is a bit different... as shown in the example code within that event...

        e.control.firstname_A5INSTANCE2 = "Bob"

          Re: set value in repeating section with xbasic

          You could return javascript to execute instead of doing it in xbasic:

          Code:
          	dim js as c =<<%js%
          	var _d = new Object();
          	for (i=1; i<4; i++) {
          		_d['VAL1:'+i] = {val}; //set the value of a repeating section control called 'VAL1'
          	}

          %js%
          	dim val as n = 26;
          	js = evaluate_string(js);
          	*concat(js,"{dialog.object}.prepare();{dialog.object}.populate(_d,1,false,true);{dialog.object}.refreshClientSideComputations();")
          The e._set.etc stuff is converted to javascript anyway and if you have a lot of values you want to set, Alpha suggests generating the javascript yourself instead of having the system do it.

          'Using Javascript to Set Control Values -- Recommended For Maximum Efficiency When setting a Large Number of Controls
          '---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          'When setting the value of a large number of controls, you will improve performance if you generate the Javascript directly,
          'rather than setting properties in the e._set object (as described above) and then having Alpha Five generate the Javascript from this object.

            Disagree. dialogValidate supports both the e._set and e.object syntax.

              So it does... thanks Sarah... I rarely use that event for setting values... completely forgot it does both.

                Sarah and David,
                You have been always so helpful.
                in the end I went for xbasic in an button event :

                for i = 1 to 3
                eval("e._set.myCtl_A5INSTANCE"+i+".value") = 26
                next
                I will keep in mind the javascript in case of setting values in a large number of controls
                Thanks

                  I kinda wish there was only one way to skin the cat in this case. Having both e.control and e._set makes for confused kittens when you do something and decide to move it later somewhere that doesn't support one or the other. :(

                    I know what you mean. I keep vague recollections of what I can do where in about 5% of my usable brain. However, when I go to do something I always get there and say... ok... what am I actually able to do here... what's available and what isn't.
