Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Adding new Columns to a List View

I've got a List View which I have set up and working great. Since creating it I've been asked to add 2 new columns to the Database Table which now need entering into the List View

I've tried adding them into the List SQL Select Statement under Data Source and then they are showing in Fields and List Layout. But I can't get it to add them to the Fields to update in the List

I've added them as Databound Fields in the UX but this is not updating the database fields

The only way I've got this to work in the past is through creating a new List but I'd rather avoid it this time as I've done quite a bit of styling and layout setup for the current list

Is there any way to add them to the already created List?

    Thanks

Re: Adding new Columns to a List View

Are the original updateable fields databound, or are they detail fields of the list? If they are detail fields of the list, you can use the Detail View - Quick setup genie to add the two new fields and connect them to the list. If all of the fields are databound, put in a debug control and see what sql is being sent back to update the server.

Thank you very much!! I completely missed the Genie option at the bottom

      Works a treat

Re: Adding new Columns to a List View

So I am running into this same issue (even tried using the genie at the bottom to add the new controls to the component). The list has a parent list (not sure if that is what is causing the issue) but having to recreate both of these lists along with tying all the list columns to their detail view controls again will be a huge pain (50 controls at least between the two lists). This doesn't always happen when I add a new column to a table that I then want to pull into a list with a detail view, but when it does the only fix has been to do a complete rebuild as I stated above (which is not efficient at all). Am I missing something somewhere (I also tried to do a recalculation of both list controls to no avail)?

The issue is that I can see the new columns in the list layout and when I click on an item in the list the data in the columns loads into the detail view fields (when I just manually put the data in the database), but when I save it doesn't update the list with the new values (rather reverts back to the old values). When I turn on debug mode for the list in question (which is the child of a parent list) all I see in the update statement is the link column to the parent list being updated. I've run into issues before where if I add a new column to a table and then tie that column to a list with a detail view, I would get write conflict errors if I didn't first manually update that column to not be null (specifically with number columns I would need to put all zeros into the column first or I'd get write conflicts). In this case it is two text columns so I'm not getting the write conflict error like normal (though I did try to add arbitrary text to all rows in the table to see if I could edit it to no avail). Thanks for the help as always!
