Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    list filter expressions

I want to limit what records are shown in a list that everyone can see. The records in the list will have to be viewable by everyone with a level of 2 or higher (4 - Admins, 3 - Owners, 2 - Managers, 1 - Installers) unless they are specifically selected as not being able to see it, and everyone with a level of 1 will only see the record if they are specifically selected as being able to see it. The selections are done when the records are made and the userIDs are selected from checkbox controls that are dynamically populated from the user table. It would be easy to do this as a SQL filter, but since I will be referencing the userID and level value either from a control on the UX or from a session variable, I believe that not an option. Client-side filters (using Javascript) seem to be an option, but I am not sure how I would setup the expression, which is basically this:

    show records WHERE

    User_ID = Allowed_IDs

    OR

    User_Group_level_number >= Allowed_Level AND User_ID NOT = Denied_ID's

Bold is from the list/SQL table
Underlined is from control or variable

Is there a way to do this with the Client-side Filter, or maybe even a different data source type for the list?

Why don't you put the value from the SQL table in a hidden control (but leave it visible when testing)? Then create a javascript filter for the list using a {dialog.object}.getValue() and get the value from the control. In the help in the javascript window, look for <listObject>.setFilter().
I hope this gets you started.

I'll have to look into <listObject>.setFilter()., but I dont think I am quite understanding the hidden control thing yet. What value would it be pulling? is it pulling it from the list control itself or from each record?

        Re: list filter expressions

After looking into it more, I think that .setFilter will be the way I do it, so thank you for that insight.

If I am understanding you better, then you are suggesting to hide that value as a field in the list control and then reference that in my JS filter?

If so, what method would I use to determine if "Apple" (for example) is one of the values in that hidden control, and what event should I put this JS in?

          Re: list filter expressions

Had that problem. I have a hidden field in the list that contains a short string I maintain at the SQL database.
In my case, the user has need of being limited to a class of record.

The unusual string is something like #$>_<$# where I substitute for the _ character the class of record.

Client-side filtering is snot-fast, and gets it done.

Probably something like <C1> <C2> <C3> would have been sufficiently obtuse, but I just made it less likely it would show up in regular data.

Ahhh, this is new territory to me, so let me see if I am understanding you. You convert the values of 1 and 2 into #$>1<$# and #$>2<$# on client-side, save it, then use JS "decipher" the string into the original values of 1 and 2? If so, how?

Thank you for your post by the way. I briefly thought of a similar way to separate values bub did not know if it was feasible.

              Re: list filter expressions

              I'll use shorter hidden strings.

              Record Class/Hidden field
              A / $1$2$3$
              B / $2$3$
              C / $3$

Bubba only sees class A -- His filter is $1$
Manager only sees Classes A,B -- His filter is $2$
Superuser sees Classes, A,B,C -- His filter is $3$

Not the codes I used, but it works and is damn fast. Filter is a CONTAINS filter.

                Re: list filter expressions

Well that will definitely help me with 1/2 of the filtering I want. Classes are definitely something I need, but I also need to assign users individually. In this case, I want no "Bubbas" to see any records unless I specifically put their Id in the record, but I may put several Bubba Ids in there. I want Managers and up to be able to see everything by default UNLESS I specifically put their Id in a no-show field, and can also have multiple ID's.

Basically my values contained within $_$ will be dynamic, and are userid's (FirstnameLastname), so when I apply the values into the record I should make sure to put "$" on both sides of it, then look for $userid$, right?

Can you do that server side?

My focus has been client-side as the route man is out and about.

I am not sure honestly, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a way.
