Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

When opening a report we have temp file issues....

The following files are created in the temp/AlphaAnywhere/p_xxxx folder: DBF, DDD , DDM and DDX. The files are never cleaned up until the app server is restarted. My question is how do we either clean them up properly or stop creating them altogether? We just use the standard Open a Report, Label or Letter layout and then choose a report in our @ProjectReport area. This opens the a5rpt report for viewing or printing. Also on the development server the files are deleted properly or are not created at all. Only on the live production server does this happen. All settings and builds on both servers are the same. Under the advance tab on the web server we have set the Temporary Files Remove files older than 15 minutes We are on build 2689-4440. Yes we have tried a full re-install.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Re: When opening a report we have temp file issues....

Are those files causing you trouble? We print hundreds of reports every day and, yes, those files get created and, yes, every night we restart the web server instances which cleans them up. For us, no harm, no foul.

In case you didn't know, those files are .dbf files. My guess is Alpha didn't rewrite the report writer, especially for those of us who still use the Amyuni driver, they simply created .dbf tables out of the SQL tables and used those for the reports. So, that's what you see. They actually do a very good job of cleaning them up if you restart regularly.

By the way, in my case, the aex files are also stored there, so don't get too ambitious about cleaning that area out. Best to leave it to Alpha's routine.

Re: When opening a report we have temp file issues....

All files in the "temp/AlphaAnywhere/p_xxxx folder" are cleaned out based on various conditions. These folders are cleared out on shutdown and restart as well as the criteria in the temporary file cleanup settings. This setting can be set on the App server setting genie on the "Advanced" tab. The default is to remove files older that 15 minutes old based on the last modified time.

This test is run every time a temp file is added to the folder. So if there were a series of files created, but then no new files are added for some period of time, they will stay in the folder until the next temp file is created. The cleanup runs in the background, so the cleanup may not be instantaneous.

The process will also not delete any files that are in use, such as could happen on a long running report or possibly on a hung report.

        Hi Pat,

Yes they are giving me trouble. They completely fill up our servers drive and then of course it stops. They do not clean up ever for any reason unless we reboot the app server. This is just not acceptable.

Post 7 in this thread seems to have a solution?

Thanks Stan but we just use the open a report genie and I do not see any way to follow the code that was posted in #7.

It completely shut down one of our servers yesterday. Over 14 g of dbf files.

Jerry at Alpha has fixed this issue today. It should be in the next pre-release. Thanks Alpha.
