Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

New to Alpha, need some guidance on using the security features.

    Hi,

I am new to using Alpha Anywhere. I bought a licence a few months ago and I created a decent app that will suit my needs.

Now I need to add some security features and create logins for a few users.

I cant seem to find any good resource or tutorial that can guide me through the basics of security. All the results in google are posts from 2013 in which they all say "new" security features are on the way but I don't see any actual guides.

I really do enjoy using alpha, and I am stuck at this point.

If anyone can give me some advice or point me in a direction I would be extremely grateful.

    Hello Andy,

Within Alpha Anywhere click on the Videos option in the right top menu. Then type the word: security. There are many videos to cover the Security Framework.

First thing you need to do is make security active. Click on Web Security and enabled it. Then go through each property and tab. If you click on a specific property in Web Security there are notes telling you what that property does. Once you have all the security options you want then it is time to add security groups. The security groups can be named anything you want but I would make the names meaningful such as Web Admin, Admin, Supervisor, User, etc. After that point you will need to apply security to all of your pages, files, components, etc. In Web Security again go through Page Security and Component Security. For example, your login page/component should be "Always Allowed". Most every other component should be set to "Requires login" and then what ever security group can see/use that component. Finally, after that, you can setup a user using "Users and Groups" and test your app. If you haven't done so already you should have a component that adds users rather than going through Alpha security. Alpha has a UX template for that (If i recall correctly).

I hope that helps and gives you a jump start on what you need.

        Thanks for your reply,

I made a login page with some users etc etc.

But how do I test it? It doesn't seem to work in working preview or live preview?

            Hi Andy,

Did you publish all components locally for testing purposes? You need to create a profile and choose Publishing Type as: Publish Locally. Enter Target Folder, Default page etc.

Security isn't enabled/used in Live Preview or Working Preview. Like Doron said you will need to publish locally (to the computer you are using to develop your app) and then test it there.
