Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Do I want a pivot table? Crosstab? I don't know, and I could you a proper name to search

Hello everyone. Let me start by saying that I don't know what I need. I searched and search, but perhaps I am using the wrong words in my search.

My customer has a a dozen employees. Each is responsible for providing monthly updates that quite simply is a customer count. Very easy. My customer wants the result to look like they did in Excel for years.

Column A title "Employee" and rows of data are the employee names, Column B is "March/2020" and rows of data are the employee's customer count. There will also be a column next to the month/year column that gets the difference between the two months to track if the employee gained or lost customers. Next month, we need to automatically move Columns B & C to Columns C & D and add Column B title "April/2020" with each row having the employee's customer count.

Kind of similar to a hotel tracking rooms with dates and where X and Y meet is the customer name, I need X to be the employee name, Y to be the date (that changes monthly), and the customer count where they meet. How do I create something that will constantly bump the columns down one to make room for the new month / year, and have each employee add their stuff? I was thinking a simple UX for the employee that has the month/year and their name. They enter the data. They don't need to see everyone else's data. Then the manager can open either a grid or a list and see the layout I described above.

I thought of Pivot table, but what I searched does not seem to be the same (although this updated forum is a bit cumbersome to search). I found CrossTab, but I'm not sure if that is what I need. Maybe it is?

Direction here is appreciated. Thank you.

I think I understand what you're looking for.
The link shows our basic time off calendar.
It pulls time off automatically every 5 minutes, and changes the date column each day programmatically.
if this is the basic idea of what you want, there should be code of mine somewhere in the history, during a thread with sben.

The link came up blank (just a couple of words, but otherwise blank), but what you describe is probably enough to get me started. If the user can enter data, and the the columns can be added programmatically, then it sounds about right.

The column count is static, the column headers and data are dynamic.
I'm going to try again for the link.http://www.youshould-seethis.com/possiblypivot.png

Yes, I believe that is very much what I am looking for. Dynamic column titles, and those dynamic titles would also show up in a UX for each employee to enter their customer count.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. It's not easy to find almost 2 year old sample code when you have to search through 5 computers.
Which sql do you use ?
Can you provide the schema for your database ?
and of course, can you provide the basic UX you want to use ?

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. Since the forum update, I no longer get email notifications, and when I go into the forum settings, it will not let me update as it asks for my license number, yet there is no where to enter it that I have found.

Anyway, I use MySQL. I had both a table and UX that I tried to sample, but I ended up deleting both figuring I should start over on the thought. My thought was for the table to simply be employee, monthYear, and customerCount. The UX was going to limit the sessionID to be the same as the employee, so they see only themselves. Like I said, I deleted both figuring I'd clean off my drafting table and start over on the thought.

The lack of email notices is one of the things they obviously ignored in their rush to make this change.
The fact you use MySQL makes things a lot easier for me. I would still prefer to work with a table as you design it.
I am attaching a link to the test stuff from 2018. I believe I have code for MySQL and mssql, as well as a grid .
The best way to collaborate with this is telephone and some kind of screen sharing. My phone number is 608-345-2697.
