Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Linking repeating sections

    Hello everyone,

Is it possible to link repeating sections?

For example, I have a main table, TABLE1 (T1), I have a repeating section TABLE2 (T2) that links back to T1. So far, so good, however, I also have TABLE3 (T3) that should be linked to T2 but when I try to do that A5 Tells me it needs to link with T1. T2 is already linked to T1, now I need T3 to link with T2 on some other field.

    A crappy example:

    T1_ID NAME
    1 Smith
    -----------------------------------------------------------

    T2_ID T1_ID_fk Address
    1 1 100 Main St.
    2 1 999 South Ave
    ----------------------------------------------------------

    T3_ID T2_ID_fk Phone
    1 1 (555) 911-9999
    2 2 (555) 555-1212
    3 2 (555) 123-8686
    ---------------------------------------------------------

I'm new to using UX, I've been using Grids and this was ok in grids, I just don't know how to link the T2 and T3.

    Thanks for any help.

    -John

Let me try to explain again.

      I'm using panels. I have a client on panel one: IBM Client_ID = 1

I move to panel two where I have the countries my client is in (Table2). I have a Repeating Section (RS) linked to the Client from page one by the Client_ID field. (IBM has offices in Belgium and France) [Linking by Client_ID <-> Client_ID]

Under that RS I have (Table3) where I have people who work in the respective offices. I want to be able to link the two RS together by the Unique ID that is generated for Table2. So the Link Field in Table3 would be 1 for Fred, June and Helen and it would be 9 for Pete. I get an error message saying I have to link it to data in Panel one but that's not what I want to do.

Is this not possible using UX's and Panels? Am I doing somethng wrong?

      Thanks for any help

      -John

Use lists instead of repeating sections, they now have inline editing and you can link as many sub tables as you wish

Binding to the UX as the repeating sections do, just doesn't cut it anymore, I'm stunned it still exists. While the List Control is a heavy solution, for now I'd follow the advice from lance for now.

            Thank you both.

My first question is, am I using the UX correctly, meaning, should I be doing this in a UX or just stick with grids?

I'm really new to UX and as everyone is moving in that direction I think I should get on board; it does confuse me though, I'm not exactly sure what they are used for? Anyway, I did eventually figure it couldn't be done with repeating sections (though it would have been really nice!) so I started to check on Lists.

I created a simple test and I'm thinking the way to go is to use Lists and a Detail view for sections that need a lot of data to be entered and maybe inline editing for those section that only need a few fields added/edited. Does that seem right?

So far I have only gotten to having 3 lists on a UX and the links seem to be working fine. Next I will need to have a test adding a button(s) to add a new record/move between records etc. and see if it works.

I come back to my original question though on if I'm using the UX for its intended purpose. Is this how you guys would do this? or maybe use grids and put grids on the UX?

            Thanks

The recommendation of Grid vs. UX really depends on who you are developing for and how much time you have to spend programming. If only a few people (less than 20 - 50 per server instance) will use your system and they will only be using desktop computers that always have a connection to the web server then Grid is nice. If you have to support more simultaneous users, or mobile devices, or any offline device, or this is a commercial app then learn and use only UX's for everything!
