Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Grid Vs UX

    Hi Guys,

I've been using grids for developing browser based system for the last couple of years and I have managed them fine with no issue.

However the same issue that I have with the grid is the way it is presented and the flexibility of the grid as well e.g. styling and repsonsive layout, I am now thinking of moving some grids over to a UX but I have some reservations:
    • The grids i've built have at least 500 records in and the grid handles the load well, would a List control in a UX handle this?
    • In the past when building mobile applications and using the List I've had issues with saving and syncing where records would in some cases overwrite each other. Normally in a mobile app I would add a List with a Detail View and in my 'Synchronization Policy' I would switch on Client to Server. Would this still be the case
    • I use Linked Grids a lot and is this possible in a UX? Would I to have add embedded UX's and use arguments?

    Thanks.

First of all, unless it is a REALLY small and simple grid, Grids are generally not recommended for mobile applications - they just are not built for them.

List controls will handle as many records as a grid will handle. If you find it is going too slow or if you have a lot of records, you can set up the list to paginate the data. This is basically the same as how a grid works but lists are not set that way by default.

Linked Grids and Linked lists are very different. But if you are building for a mobile app, the concept of a grid within a grid would not work well on that screen size anyway. You can have parent lists, but you can also chain lists together manually very easily. It's a completely different programming method than linking grids though.

You can't "synchronize" grids at all - so if you are developing an offline app, you can not use grids. Period.

Hope some of that answers your questions.

      Hi,

      Thanks for the reply.

This would all be for a browser based application rather than a mobile app. I'm currently using Grids but I am looking to switch over the UX component instead.

I've built mobile applications before using PGB and UX Lists but never really produced big lists that I have been using for grid components.

      Thanks.

I use a mix of grids and UX's in all my browser based apps. You have WAY more control over things in a UX, but grids are soo much easier. When time is constrained, grids get the job done. If functionality and looks are more important - you may be better off with a UX.

So take a look at this message https://forum.alphasoftware.com/foru...ing-it-and-why
The question is, have things moved so fast even the List Control has become a tool that's now becoming bloated with options going down the path of the Grid?, The ViewBox is surfacing as the real star for presenting us with data that we want to do something fast with with like scroll without issues, update data delete data add data without delay, - I think so. Up until 10 days ago I would have said, let the Edit vs View determine either ViewBox or List Control, now I say, if you need performance, over features, you should be thinking Viewbox. I'm not saying the List Control doesn't have a place, it does when special needs apply in presentation features attract you to it, but to get data in and out and do something with it either Mobile or Browder your fist stop should be the ViewBox. The number of record in a database if designed correctly is no longer relevant to performance. Also embedding objects become less needed or needed at all as the latest controls (livk the ViewBox) have such low overhead. - Cheers, Pete.

I use both Grids and UX's but that's mostly because I started using Alpha so long ago that Grids were the main component (and the Dialog component as UX's are now called).
The only Grids I use are the legacy ones that I haven't gotten around to updating yet.
I would never use a Grid component moving forward, they just don't have the same responsive design, flexibility or power of the UX in my opinion.

I have to agree with Pete, the Viewbox is an amazingly lightweight, fast UX component that is ideal for displaying data. As long as you don't need to get too fancy, it is the best alternative to the larger List component.

It also now a great segway now into CRUD functions without the load of legacy xbasic routines in the DOM. Loving it.

                Hi All,

Thank you for the repsonses, I'll have a look at the viewbox and see if it something that I could use. I've not used the viewbox, does it act the same way as a Detail View in a Grid component? e.g CRUD?

Also looking at some of the videos can you use a viewbox to edit multiple fields on the screen at once or do you have to go field by field? E.g. Does the viewbox act in the same way as a Detail View?

                Thanks again.
