Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Why Does iPad Preview Within Alpha Show Different UI Effects vs. Actual iPad?

I am trying to fit my mobile app's detail page on an iPad 4 (horizontal). What is happening however, is that my app appears correctly after tightening up the spaces between individual fields when I preview it in working preview using the iPad 4 (horizontal) view. It's not showing up on the actual iPad with the tightened up fields. Why? The working preview apparently doesn't reproduce what one expects on the iPad4! See attached screenshots.

    Help!

Because working preview uses IE to render the page and on your ipad you probably use the Safari browser.

Thanks for your quick reply, but if this is supposed be a preview of the iPad UI, shouldn't it be compatible with Safari from the start? I don't know of an iPad running IE? Do you?

Re: Why Does iPad Preview Within Alpha Show Different UI Effects vs. Actual iPad?

It is compatible with Safari but the Alpha development environment uses IE (although more & more Chrome) to render pages. Browse to a site on your ipad with Safari then to the same site with Chrome for ipad & notice that many sites render different. It is an issue as old as the internet & browsers. Alpha is not to blame. For final touch you'll need to test on the device(s) you're developing for & the browsers that will be used on that device. it is a good idea if you develop for a customer that you on the forehand agree as to what devices & browsers should be supported to avoid discussions. Same for web development by the way.

Is it then a best practice to use so-called 'responsive design' attributes to have an app conform to the dimensions and idiosyncracies of the iPad's browser (i.e. Safari)? And secondly, the setting that I've been fiddling with to tighten the layout to conserve layout space is on the UX's property page, specifically the CSS|A5CWLayout class padding setting set to 0px. Does this mean that Safari 'ignores' this setting? What other option do I have?

          Thanks,
          Peter

I haven't looked very closely lately, but don't you have the option to choose a browser during development preview ?

Responsive design means as the term suggests that the layout will change in response to the way you for example hold a device (portrait or landscape) or to the way you for example resize a browser window. it does not play on the individual controls & rendering differences between browsers. As Gregg pointed out there are browsers you can choose from during development to do a LIVE preview whereas WORKING is IE or Chrome based whichever you select bottom left:iecr.png as it is tied in with the whole development environment. That said even when doing a LIVE preview using Safari for Windows (which BTW is no longer developed by Apple) will not even render the same as compared to Safari on your iPad.

I've just downloaded Chrome for iPad to see if I have the same issues as in Safari. And unfortunately it's the same situation. Ultimately, I have to find the Alpha property setting that will reduce the spacing between individual fields.

What style are you using - the sample does not look like IOS 7.

I finally found the solution to my problem of reducing the spacing between fields, particularly when the app is used on an iPad.

After searching the forums for a while, I decided to search on the word 'spacing' in the video library that is supplied with Alpha. I came upon a video by Selwyn (UX-V12-39) 'Using CSS to Control Padding & Spacing'. This video had a similar scenario where some UI objects needed to have their padding reduced so as to act as drop down icon bars on a mobile device. The technique used is the technique that finally solved my problem. I've attached a screenshot showing the settings I used along with the CSS that needs to be created to achieve the effect I was looking for. I am posting this for anyone who may run into a similar situation.

Re: Why Does iPad Preview Within Alpha Show Different UI Effects vs. Actual iPad?

In my pursuit to adapt my app to the iPad, I've got to post this experience to ask others if they've had the same happen to them.

Once a user logs into my app, the main menu UX is presented. However, the iPad (using Safari) cuts off the title of the app on initial viewing (see attached screenshot). Only if the user rotates the iPad from portrait to landscape and then back to portrait does the upper part of my main menu screen appear (for both portrait and landscape). Why? This happens to other UX components as well.

Frustrated with the fact that Safari offers no way to suppress the URL locator, bookmarks and other gibberish at the top (in other words make the app fill the entire screen), I downloaded a third-party browser called Mercury. It turns out that Mercury gives the user the ability to go full screen or not (along with a myriad of other options). I don't have to rotate the iPad from portrait to landscape and back again as in Safari. Plus, it's free and it's way better than Safari. It's also available for iPhones and Androids.

So short of applying some sort of javascript for which I have no idea where to look, Mercury seems to be the answer to making my app work correctly.

Maybe you could offset the top when in Safari in landscape mode?
