Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Using .toExcel on a server

    I've been able to create an Xbasic ajax callback function that saves files on my server as .CSV but when I call the rs.ToExcel("filename") function it doesn't create the spreadsheets. Here's my code - does anyone see an issue or has anyone been able to create Excel spreadsheets that can then be downloaded from the server?

    Code:
    function StateRatioExport
    ...
    webpath="e:\a5webroot\arpro\\"
    filename="state_sales_ratio"
    fullname=webpath+filename

    'Execute the sql query
    cn.Execute(sqlstring,args)

    'If successful generate the file and download
    if cn.CallResult.Text = "Success" then
        'Build string to start download after file is created
        StateRatioExport = "window.location = '"
        rs=cn.ResultSet
        'Determine which filetype to create
        select case
            case filetype = 1
                'Create Excel 97-2003 file
                rs.ToExcel(fullname+".xls")
                StateRatioExport = StateRatioExport + filename+".xls"
            case filetype = 2
                'Create Excel 2007-later file
                rs.ToExcel(fullname+".xlsx")
                StateRatioExport = StateRatioExport + filename+".xlsx"
            case filetype = 3
                'Create comma-delimited CSV with headers
                csvfile=rs.ToCSV(.t.)
                file.from_string(fullname+".csv",csvfile)
                StateRatioExport = StateRatioExport + filename+".csv"
        end select
        StateRatioExport = StateRatioExport+"';"
    else
        StateRatioExport="alert('ERROR: Unable to create the download file:/n"+js_escape(cn.CallResult.Text)+"');"
    end if

    Okay I actually got it to work. Turns out to have been an issue with my webpath that needed to be corrected for the server used on the client system. The code itself works well.

      Re: Using .toExcel on a server

      Here's a related question. Is there any way to format the data that rs.ToExcel() creates. For instance I have a tax year column that when I export to Excel Alpha places as a numeric field with commas i.e. 2,014. Also I have a decimal ratio field that Alpha is exporting as a rounded whole number instead of the full decimal field. When I export to CSV which is unformatted I get the full decimal precision and of course the year doesn't have commas.

        Hey Brad,

        Could you say how you downloaded the file from the server?
        It exports and saves as desired but I now need the client to be able to access the file or download it through some alpha method.
        Any suggestions?

          Re: Using .toExcel on a server

          The key to having the report sent back to the client are the lines that start with StateRatioExport which happens to be the name of this particular Xbasic callback function. You need to build a javascript command that ends up looking like this:

          Code:
          window.location='filename.ext';
          where filename.ext is the name of the Excel worksheet you created. Also, be sure that your Excel worksheet is being created in the web application's root directory so that it is accessible.

          When you set the name of your Xbasic function to this value, Alpha returns the string as an executable javascript which opens a window to the name of the file to be downloaded and starts the download process on your browser.

          I hope that's clear!
