Client-Side Filter List Control initial load

I'm searching but I'm not finding the answer to this one. Probably been staring at this too long.

There's a field in List Properties under Client-Side Filter/Order and Grouping, "Filter". I want to get all the records for my list for a time period and only show the records where data.START_DATE == today. I have a field in my UX that has the current date. I tried using this "Filter" property, but not succesfully. EG:

data.START_DATE == {dialog.object}.getValue('LOG_DATE')

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut, this isn't working and I'm not sure what I need to do to make this work.

Has anyone successfully used the filter with a dynamic value?

Don't know if this will help or not Sarah, but I think I have something similar. I have a user-controlled checkbox control that "toggles" a list filter. In my case, it's based on the current date (it's a list of prescriptions: "current" or "all" type thing). Took me a while to find a solution too. What I ended up doing was adding a column xDate_End to my SQL view to hold the numeric value of the date, e.g. 20150414. Then:

In the OnDialogInitialize:

vn_date = val(dtos(Date())
e._state._prescripcurrentday = vn_date

And on the checkbox OnChange event:

var lObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('Prescriptions');

//state variable is set in OnDialogInitialize:
var pday = {dialog.object}.stateInfo['_prescripcurrentday'];

if (this.checked == true)
	{
	lObj.setFilter(function(data){

Your example certainly helps! The filter example was very useful.

So, what I did was I put the list in a container and set it's CSS style to display:none;. Then, in the onLoadComplete javascript event for another UX that's embedded in my UX, I added code to filter the list and show it:

var d = new Date();
filterListOnDate(d);
$('{dialog.componentName}.V.R1.CONTAINER_12').style.display = '';

I get the end result I want, but I'd still like to figure out how to use the filter property in the List control to do this.
