Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

UX Record Navigation - weird results

    Hello everyone,

I am trying to learn to use UX's. I have a UX databound to my table in Access. I have Previous-Next buttons etc. and all works well. I then needed to search for records so I watched Selwyn's videos FP11_DLGNAV2, followed along and have the pieces I need. I thought it was working but then I noticed the following.
    • Before doing a search it shows we are sitting on record 1 of 1312, (in fact, there should be 1320. I have the Maximum Number of Keys to Load set to 2000) and sorted high to low. NOT CORRECT
    • If I do a search for record 1011 it show we are sitting on record 1 or 1. CORRECT
    • If I remove the number in the search box and click Search I now get we are sitting on record 1 of 1000 and the order is now low to high. NOT CORRECT

So can anybody tell me what is going on? I thought this would work the same a in a grid but it doesn't appear so.

    Thanks for any help.

All I can say is Why are you still using Grids? Why do you have a UX that is bound to anything? Why are you following FP11_DLGNAV2, it is 8 years old? What are the steps you are trying to achieve? And what outcome are you looking for? tTy an an put it in a Northwinds context - YES I know it's old but its common to us all. Tell me and I'll try and show you how to do it with 2020 Tools. Understand I'm not at all trying to offend you, I'm trying to point out the video you have quoted should not be available to you ar its irrelevant today.

Legacy information is a BIG problem - it needs to be removed by Alpha in my view.

        Hi Peter,

Thanks for the reply. No offence taken. Answers to your questions below:

Why do you have a UX that is bound to anything? - I thought I was supposed to use data binding when using a UX? Is that not the case?

All I can say is Why are you still using Grids? - I've used lots of grids and they're easy to use and work well, plus, I can't rewrite every grid to use a UX instead of a grid and especially when I can't even get this one working. Once I get a handle on UX I might try that though.

Why are you following FP11_DLGNAV2, it is 8 years old? - That's the only information I could find on how to search using a UX component. Is there another video that is more up to date? that's the only one I found under Help in AA V12.

All I can say is Why are you still using Grids? - I've used lots of grids (as we all have) and they're easy to use and work well, plus, I can't rewrite every grid to use a UX instead of a grid - this was my first attempt and appears I have done everything wrong. However, in this UX, I'm not using a grid, it is a list view control, again, built from the instructions in the video from the help section.

Okay, so here's what I am trying to do and if there is a better way I'm all for it, I don't claim to be a great screen designer so if panels would work better or anything else I'm 100% open to it. Please understand, I am new to UX.

Let me start with something very simple and then I can, hopefully, build on it. So, simply put, using Northwind as an example:

I'd like to have a listing of Customers (Customer Name, Country) on the left of the screen with the ability to [Show More]
        Sorted by Customer Name, Country
I'd like to have the all of the fields to the right where I can edit the data.
I'd like the user to be able to [Add] a new Customer, go to the [Next] Customer, Last, First etc. using either the list or [Previous] [Next] buttons.
I'd like the user to be able to search on Customer name and/or Country
I'd like to be able to clear the search criteria and for the list to revert to it's original state, sorted as originally sorted etc.

After that I'd like to be able to add Orders, using repeating sections? (I posted a separate message a while ago about linking a repeating section using more than one field. It looked like it wasn't possible but my real project needs to do that, I'd have to go search to find that post)

This would be great learning for me if you could help.

        I appreciate it.

        Thanks

        -John

This is another control I'd avoid. send me a screenshot of you current build.
