Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to duplicate record in List with Detail View?

    Hi
    In my app i need to provide, for many lists ( with detail view for editing), the following options:
    - New Record --> nothing fancy here, just runs the classic newDetailViewRecord()
    - Duplicate Selected Row to NEW: -> this i need to put in a button in the list in each row. Clicking on the button should create a new record in the detail view and populate the fields with the values from the currently selected row in the list.
    I know i can do this with a series of getValue and setValue, the problem is i have some lists with hundreds of fields, it will take me ages to implement manually.

    Many thanks
    Jaime

    I would do it in an Ajax callback. The button in the row will give you the primary key, then go to Xbasic and duplicate the row in the database, returning the new primary key.. Then, refresh the list and set the new row as selected to the new primary key. If it is a very big table, you could even do it in a stored procedure to make it blindingly fast.

      Thanks Pat
      The problem is that i don't want to duplicate the row at the DB level, but rather open the detail view in "insert" mode, but fill-in all fields (to the exception of the primary key obviously) with data from the selected row when the button was clicked...

        Then, I think you have to do it the hard was in JavaScript.

          Hi,
          I use a code to move data from one list to another.
          I use the list object _data array to get the data from the list.
          then using that array you can add it to that same list.

          Something like that:

          var lObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('LSTBASKETDET');
          var mlenght = lObj._data.length
          for (i = 0; i < var mlenght; i++) {
          }

          If you want I can share the code I use.

          I hope this helps

            Thanks Paul, i use the "list mover" code too, but i don't see how this helps in this scenario. Please note i have no problem achieving what i need "the hard way" (i.e .setValue to each specific control) , but am looking for a fast way to populate all the fields.

              Here is a detailed Video on what you want to do.
              It also covers many topics but focuses on that you are wanting to achive.

              https://www.screencast.com/t/qoIohGl2rGi

              The Video explains below it's here for you to get started

              //store the values to state variables so we can make them available for other use or editing anywhere in the component.
              //
              {dialog.object}.stateInfo['CustomerID_Orders'] = {dialog.Object}.getValue('CustomerID_Orders'); //theCustomerID is is used several times in the component by adding
              {dialog.object}.stateInfo['EmployeeID_Orders'] = {dialog.Object}.getValue('EmployeeID_Orders'); // _Orders to the controls name gives clarity to which CustomereID
              {dialog.object}.stateInfo['OrderDate'] = {dialog.Object}.getValue('OrderDate'); //we are dealing with.
              {dialog.object}.stateInfo['ShipName'] ={dialog.Object}.getValue('ShipName');
              {dialog.object}.stateInfo['RequiredDate'] ={dialog.Object}.getValue('RequiredDate');
              {dialog.object}.stateInfo['ShippedDate'] = {dialog.Object}.getValue('ShippedDate');
              {dialog.object}.stateInfo['ShipVia'] = {dialog.Object}.getValue('ShipVia');
              {dialog.object}.stateInfo['ShipAddress'] = {dialog.Object}.getValue('ShipAddress');
              {dialog.object}.stateInfo['ShipCity'] = {dialog.Object}.getValue('ShipCity');
              {dialog.object}.stateInfo['ShipRegion'] = {dialog.Object}.getValue('ShipRegion');
              {dialog.object}.stateInfo['ShipPostalCode'] = {dialog.Object}.getValue('ShipPostalCode');
              {dialog.object}.stateInfo['ShipCountry'] = {dialog.Object}.getValue('ShipCountry');

              setTimeout(function(){
              var lObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('ORDERS');
              lObj.newDetailViewRecord();
              }, 500);

              //// give the new Detail View Record()to clear the controls and insert then copy the data from state to controls in thDetail View.

              setTimeout(function(){

              //// one of the great things with keeping control names the same as the database
              //// is it allows you to get fields names etc easily.. just run a Query in SQLL and past it back here..
              //// e.g.
              //// ,['CustomerID']
              //// ,['EmployeeID']
              //// ,['OrderDate']
              //// ,['RequiredDate']
              //// ,['ShippedDate']
              //// ,['ShipVia']
              //// ,['Freight']
              //// ,['ShipName']
              //// ,['ShipAddress']
              //// ,['ShipCity']
              //// ,['ShipRegion']
              //// ,['ShipPostalCode']
              //// ,['ShipCountry']
              //
              ////now we have them in mememory (like notpad) we can just past the back to he Detail control, after we execute the newDetailViewRecord() function

              {dialog.Object}.setValue('CustomerID_Orders',{dialog.object}.stateInfo['CustomerID_Orders']);

              var loggedInUser = '9' // simulated logged in UsernameID for Employee Anne Dodsworth

              {dialog.Object}.setValue('EmployeeID',loggedInUser);
              //{dialog.Object}.setValue('EmployeeID',{dialog.object}.stateInfo['EmployeeID']);

              //{dialog.Object}.setValue('OrderDate'),{dialog.object}.stateInfo['OrderDate'];
              //{dialog.Object}.setValue('RequiredDate',{dialog.object}.stateInfo['RequiredDate']);
              //{dialog.Object}.setValue('ShippedDate',{dialog.object}.stateInfo['ShippedDate']);

              {dialog.Object}.setValue('ShipVia',{dialog.object}.stateInfo['ShipVia']);
              {dialog.Object}.setValue('ShipName',{dialog.object}.stateInfo['ShipName']);

                Thanks Pete, but as stated previously, i know how to do this "the hard way" but a series of getvalue and setvalue.
                The problem is i have many ux with hundreds of fields, so i was looking for a fast populate method, much like the duplicateRepeatingSectionRow() function for instance.,,

                  State Variables are you using them? You can also emit them form the list on click inside the list. re: duplicateRepeatingSectionRow() function for instance - not used that for 5 years, now it's the VB. Anyhow hope it was useful to someone.
