Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    file picker

    I have hit a brick wall this afternoon!

    All I want to do is create a list of files. I have set up the list, I have set up the detail view, there are only 4 fields to worry about,

    fileID int, 10, primarykey, autoinc
    jobno int 10
    position int 3
    filename char 250

    In the detail view I want the filename field to have a file picker whereby the user can search a drive on the server and choose a file (PDFs and Docs), and it saves the fully qualified filename in the list, used to be able to do this with an xdialog with the F directive, but in web applications I cannot seem to find anything - please help

    Is the list static (the same always) or is it dynamic, and subject to change? Do you want to pick files from the server or the user's local machine?

      Hi Jay,

      The list is dynamic and will change per job (jobno). I want the user to be able to pick files from the server, restricting to a couple of directories if necessary

        Take a look at "filefing.get()". I use this to populate a dropdown list, but I expect you could do the same with a list control. In my case, I do the following:
        vWIPFilelist = filefind.get(vProjectPath+chr(92)+"NFNWIP\*.*",FILE_FIND_NOT_DIRECTORY,"N")
        if vWIPFilelist = ""
        e.rtc.NFNWIPList = "No files found"
        else
        e.rtc.NFNWIPList = vWIPFilelist
        end if

          You could use the Server side OnDialogInitialize to populate a list from the folder and then display the list in a dropdown. Does that help for a start? If it does, what do you need to do next?

            Hi Lance,

            You'll want to use filefind.get_recurse().
            This will take to you a list of the filefind methods. https://documentation.alphasoftware....find%20methods
            Let us know if you need more help.

                Your description is a bit vague and fails to show how you're hoping to accomplish your goal.
                More info is needed for a better response.

                  Hi Greg,

                  I have a UX component, in the ux component I have a list control with detail view. The list is based on the SQL query to the table as in my first post, and filtered on jobno.

                  In the detail view I want the user to be able to access the server directory so that they can add the fully qualified filename of some pdf or doc files which are relevant to the job (jobno). These files will then be ordered in the list by the position field. Some of the files are in a common directory which can be added to by downloading manufacturers information at any time (this folder contains a lot of files from many different manufacturers which is simple to navigate in a directory format but difficult in a dropdown box) and other files are in a separate folder which is created at some stage while the job is in progress. Hopefully the end result will be a series of records in the database for all files relating to each job.

                  In the old desktop days the way I would have added the filename to my database was using an xDialog box with a text box using the F directive as in https://documentation.alphasoftware.com/documentation/pages/Ref/Desktop_Api/UI%20Functions/XDialog/Controls/Text%20Box/Text%20Box%20F%20Directive.xml but in a web based ux component I cannot find a way of replicating this behavior.

                  Does this make sense?

                    Hi Lanc,

                    Sorry about the delay.
                    I'm glad I said something because everyone responded based on a list instead of a list control.
                    I have an idea, but really prefer to test it before saying anything out loud.
                    Seeing as how you already shared the format of your sql table, please share the UX as well (I want to work with your format),
                    and let me know which flavor for sql you are using.

                      Hi Greg,

                      I literally quickly made a very quick list based ux as attached to start testing this, the idea was to get it working how I wanted and then convert it to a viewbox to cut down the overhead, it was then that I hit the file picker problem.

                        Hey Lanc,
                        The table structure in your original post has fileID as the primary key, but it's not referenced in the select statement of your UX.
                        Did something change ?

                          Hi Gregg,

                          Yes I did change the filed names in my original post for simplicity because it is only the action on the filename field that is of concern.

                            It just makes a difference as I try to see what's happening in the UX. I keep getting errors because columns don't exist.
