Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Extract JSON data from SQL result

    I'm using the SQL Genie "Query a SQL Database to get JSON data" in a UX component.

    Code:
    'DIM a SQL arguments object
    dim args as sql::arguments
    args.add("footer1",convert_type("1","Numeric"))
    args.add("footer2",convert_type("2","Numeric"))
    args.add("footer3",convert_type("3","Numeric"))
    args.add("footer4",convert_type("4","Numeric"))

    'DIM an Xbasic AlphaDAO connection object
    dim cn as sql::connection
    dim flag as l
    ''open the connection object to connect to the Database
    flag = cn.open("::Name::SQL")
    dim sql as c
    sql = "SELECT Footer, FooterText, FooterHeader FROM Footer_Data"
    'turn portable SQL on. (for more information on portable sql search in help (https://www.alphasoftware.com/documentation)
    'execute the SQL - pass in the sql::arguments object
    flag = cn.execute(sql,args)
    if flag = .f. then
    'an error occurred - get the error message from cn.callresult.text
    'report the error, close the database and then end the script
    dim errortext as c
    errortext = cn.callresult.text
    cn.close()
    end if
    'DIM a SQL::Resultset object
    dim rs as sql::resultset
    rs = cn.resultset
    'get the JSON from the query
    dim json as c
    json = rs.toJSON()
    'Clean up by freeing the resultset and then closing the database
    cn.freeresult()
    cn.close()

    The result is this

    What would I add to the SQL generated to extract the results? (ignore the arguments. They're irrelevant here.) The SQL is returning 4 records. I want to extract the "FooterText" and insert it into a text field on the UX component.

    I know how to set it if I use the arguments to filter the results, but I don't want to keep returning to the database for each record. I want to get all 4 at the same time and then set the fields in the UX.

    Instead of converting the SQL to JSON, why don't you just use the data from the SQL result set, step through the four records, and set the values in the fields?
    In pseudo-code, it would be:
    • get the value of FooterText from record 1, put that into a variable
    • get the next record
    • repeat 1st step
    • loop through all four records
    • Create javascript to populate the four text fields on the UX.

    It would be something like this (replacing everything in your Xbasic from rs = cn.resultSet
    rs = cn.resultSet
    DIM FooterText1 AS C
    DIM FooterText2 AS C
    DIM FooterText3 AS C
    DIM FooterText4 AS C
    FooterText1 = rs.data('FooterText')
    rs.NextRow()
    FooterText2 = rs.data('FooterText')
    rs.NextRow()
    FooterText3 = rs.data('FooterText')
    rs.NextRow()
    FooterText4 = rs.data('FooterText')

    cn.freeresult()
    cn.close()

    DIM js AS C = ""
    js = js + "{dialog.object}.setValue('FooterTextField1','" + FooterText1 + "'};"
    js = js + "{dialog.object}.setValue('FooterTextField2','" + FooterText2 + "'};"
    js = js + "{dialog.object}.setValue('FooterTextField3','" + FooterText3 + "'};"
    js = js + "{dialog.object}.setValue('FooterTextField4','" + FooterText4 + "'};"

    MyFunctionName = js
    end function
    This script could be more efficient, but I would start with this to try and get it working, then tweak as desired/necessary.
    Hope this helps.

      *facepalm* on the rs.NextRow() command. I was killing myself trying to figure out how to get the next record. I will give this a try. Thanks, Jay!
