Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Microsoft Office (?) Update may have broken .mdb connections? Crash when using Access driver.

    Hi,

Not sure if anyone still uses .mdb connections, but in the process of compiling some simple test tasks for job applicants we ended up using the Northwind.mdb file to avoid giving public access to any part of our SQL databases.

This worked perfectly fine, but a few days before the deadline and a laptop restart later, myself and at least one of the candidates are experiencing the below error whenever any attempt is made to connect to ANY .mdb file from Alpha Anywhere (build 5522 but the same on older builds too).

The same error happens when trying to open the Alpha Anywhere Web Application Demo too. "The Operating system is not presently configured to run this application"

For future job applications we will just have to set up an isolated SQL database or Excel file, but thought I'd give you the heads up in case this throws a spanner in anyone else's works.

My personal laptop which has no Office installations has just done a Windows update but still works fine.

In the webinar last night Dion was getting the same error, it may be a bug. Report it

Done - annoyingly it wasn't after an Alpha update and runs fine on my personal laptop without Office on it even after it just ran a Windows update!

Yes I think Dion was pretty frustrated with it

Understandable - we sent out an XBasic test for job applicants with a deadline of 20th September, with the Northwind.mdb file included as it was the easiest without opening our DB to the public... when one user reported the issue I wondered about the Alpha trial version they were using or the location of the file, but others submitted their tests AFTER this point and mine was still fine.

Then last night it popped up on mine after my laptop was restarted and my Outlook had definitely had some sort of update on it... personal laptop is still fine but also doesn't have Office installed on it.

What version have you got and do you have Office on your computer? I don't even know so far if Office is the culprit but both my work laptop and the candidate who had the eror's laptop have MS Office installed whereas my private one does not, plus my Outlook definitely had an update yesterday.

I have the latest nightly build and the latest official build and can switch between the 2.

I also have my desktop with office and my laptop without. Both running Windows 10 Pro.

I just did a test on both machines with both builds by replicating what caused Dion's problem (as soon as he linked to the Northwind database) and I do not get any errors so maybe it is specific to a build of Office?

Interesting, my Office build comes up as Version : 18.2006.1031.0 - all was working fine yesterday afternoon, then without any further installations the error came up after 8pm after a reboot which also had Outlook pop up with a new banner advertising 1Tb storage (usually seems to be something that only happens after an udpate)

Ah my office build is only 15.0.5249.1001, I still use Office Home and Business 2013. That may have something to do with it

The problem is a Windows Security update that broke the AccessDatabaseEngine which is used by Access and Excel. The latest update is not the first time a Windows update broke the driver
Just download and reinstall the driver

                        https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=13255

Select "AccessDatabaseEngine.exe" which is the 32 bit driver

Different error after re-installing as Admin and then trying to repair the driver... not a biggie as the test deadline has now expired.

Deleting the Northwind DB and re-creating it worked - the previous issues must have locked it :)
