Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Xbasic syntax to modify <<%a% ... %a%

    dim _var as c = " column = "something""

    sql = <<%a%
    SELECT column
    FROM table
    WHERE [ + _var + ]
    %a%

    I know [ + _var + ] does not work. What is the correct syntax?

    I want to produce a query like this:

    SELECT column
    FROM table
    WHERE column = "something"

    #2
    Use arguments:

    dim tcolumn as c = "something"
    args.set("vcolumn",tcolumn)
    sql = <<%a%
    SELECT column
    FROM table
    WHERE column=:vcolumn
    %a%

      I want to use text that contains more than just arguments. I want to substitute a complex WHERE statement.

        Can you give an example of "something"?

          Without more info, I am thinking of 2 possible ways to go: (1) could use if statement in where clause, or (2) could use if in the xbasic so that if one condition is true, run this query, or if that condition is true, run this other query

            Using args is preferred but here are some other alternatives absent a better example (done in the interactive window) ...

            Using stritran()
            Code:
            dim myVar as c = "column = 'hello'"

            dim sql as c = ""

            sql = "SELECT * FROM MYTABLE WHERE __STRING__"

            sql = stritran(sql,"__STRING__",myVar)

            ?sql
            = "SELECT * FROM MYTABLE WHERE column = 'hello'"
            Add var to the end
            Code:
            dim myVar as c = "column = 'hello'"

            dim sql as c = ""

            sql = "SELECT * FROM MYTABLE WHERE " + myVar

            ?sql
            = "SELECT * FROM MYTABLE WHERE column = 'hello'"
            Add var in the middle
            Code:
            dim myVar as c = "'hello'"

            dim sql as c = ""

            sql = "SELECT * FROM MYTABLE WHERE someColoumn = " + myVar + " AND someOtherColoumn = 1"

            ?sql
            = "SELECT * FROM MYTABLE WHERE someColoumn = 'hello' AND someOtherColoumn = 1"
            Quoted session var
            Code:
            dim sql as c = ""

            session.myVar = "mike"

            sql = "SELECT * FROM MYTABLE WHERE column = '" + session.myVar + "'"

            ?sql
            = "SELECT * FROM MYTABLE WHERE column = 'mike'"

              I specifically want to modify the text within the delimiters.

              Here is a contrived example - it demonstrates exactly what i want to do. I just don't know the correct syntax.:

              dim _var as c

              if x = "true" then
              _var = "use this text when true"
              else
              _var = "use this text if not true"
              end if

              sql = <<%a%
              SELECT column
              FROM table
              WHERE [ + _var + ]
              %a%

                WHERE [ + _var + ]
                %a%
                Do not make this too complicated. Your sql is just a string. So

                sql = <<%a%
                SELECT column
                FROM table
                WHERE
                %a%

                sql = sql + var

                So your original var is "use this text when true" but use this syntax " use this text when true".

                By the way there is absolutely no need to use arguments in sql if there is no user input. But if there is use then arguments.

                    The suggestion given above seems to be what you need. For example,

                    sql1 = <<%a%
                    SELECT column
                    FROM table
                    %a%

                    sql 2 = "WHERE" + "whatever you want here"

                    SQL = sql1 + sql2

                    Isn't this what you want?

                      My favorite way to do it is

                      dim myWhere as c

                      if x = "true" then
                      myWhere = " WHERE color = 'blue'"
                      else
                      myWhere = " WHERE color = 'red'"
                      end if

                      sql = <<%a%
                      SELECT column
                      FROM table
                      {myWHERE}
                      %a%

                      note those are curly brackets.

                      sql = evaluate_string(myWHERE)

                        SELECT column
                        FROM table
                        WHERE <dynWhere>
                        %a%

                        strtran(sql,"<dynWhere>","id = :id + " + _var + "+ somethingelse = :somethingelse" )
                        I typically do something like this, and then use strtran(sql,"<dynWhere>","id = :id + " + _var + "+ somethingelse = :somethingelse" ) to replace <dynWhere> with the code I really want.

                          evaluate_string() is a good method for me in this case. It allows for changing the value of a variable in only one place in a function, and then replacing the placeholder in multiple sql statements.

                          Thanks, Pat!
