Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Session Variables

Wow I have just updated to newer version of Alpha anywhere and am totally lost how to use session variables.
I use to just set variables on login like session.user_name = "whoever" and then use them anywhere I wanted to use those session variables as filters or defaults for fields I could.
I have well over 1000 components that use them the old way. Now it seems I cant do that at all.
here is no chance I cant use them anymore is there?
How the heck to you use session variables now?

You may want to ask Alpha directly does not sound right.
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

You can still use session variables. Using your example session.user_name would then be equal to "who ever".

What version of Alpha are you coming from? And can you give us an example of a session variable that isn't working in your app?

Chad, you definitely can use session variables, I am still using them.
        I set mine at login.

Not just happening on this component I have a ton of lookups that use session filters that all stop working as well.

Also finding that on login the first component that you choose will just spin (loads forever). Close it and open again with no issues at all. It doesn't matter which one you choose but the first one always fails to load.

I would ask Alpha about this, maybe something in the large jump from old to new builds.

Shot in the dark .. have you tried a rebuild controls on your components? This has sometimes fixed weird issues for me after upgrades.

How or who do I ask at Alpha?
Do I submit it as a bug?

Ya these session variables are not passing through to all the components for sure I just did a test to see the variable in the above grid and unless i set it in the OnGrid Initialize it will not show properly.
If i set it in the Grid the filtering then works. There is no chance this is what is supposed to be happening.

So you jumped from build 2446 to 4365 ?
That is a 6 year difference ... massive amounts of changes!

Yes I did. Crazy part is that this so far is the only thing that is broken. All the stuff visually is perfect. Even xbasic stuff in afterupdate events all work unless they are dealing with session variables.

Chad, personally I would submit this to Alpha as a 'possible' bug report but let them know the large build jump (just in case that has relevance). You'll just need to submit something they can reproduce .. which can be difficult.
