Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Clear browser cache on startup

I have a web app that logs the current gps coordinates when the user is logged in and presses the 'submit' button.

Normally the app works as expected.

Occasionally, a random users device will submit all records stored in their browsers cache when they submit their current gps location. Sometimes it will submit dozens of previous records along with the current record every time they press the submit button. When this happens to a user, it will continue to happen every time they submit a record until they manually go in and reset their browsers cache on their cellphone.

Is their a way to force clear their cellphone browsers cache every time they log into the app to prevent this from happening?

    Thanks

Probably should have mentioned that these records are being written to an SQL database...

Have the page check to see if the user is logged in. If so, they continue otherwise go to the login page. Here is a sample from the wiki...

      dim userName as C = Context.Security.CurrentUser
      if .not. Context.Security.CallResult.Success then
      error_generate(Context.Security.CallResult.Text)
      end if
      if alltrim(userName) = "" then
'Display "no user is logged in."
      else 'Display user name
      end if

      just a thought

You may also be able to handle this on the database side to prevent more than one record being received from the one device.

Curious to hear recommendations how to resolve it using this idea.

          Thanks

Well, I don't know your app parameters, but here is the idea:
            1. I assume your users each have their own computer
            2. You can capture the ip address as the device id (or something that recognized the specific device being used)
            3. Make sure you have a field in your coordinates table that stores the device id
            4. Create a unique index in your table for the device id, coordinates, date, etc. (whatever will make the index unique for that user at that time and location - warning: you can't use a date/time where seconds are included or it won't be unique due to the capture of the seconds)
If an attempt is made to store the same overall values in the table you will get an error and it will be rejected. You have to manage the errors being returned or ignore them. We do something similar in a mobile app we have where we have to limit user input (which could occur for a variety of reasons).. Good luck!

I think you could take all of the incoming data and strip it down to just the first X numbers of characters before you submit it - would that help? Or is there more than 1 record being submitted creating multiple rows of data in the db?
