Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    List component sorting incorrectly

    Hello everyone.

Still working on trying to use UX's. I have created a test using a table. I created a list control from the table. The PK is Computer_ID and it is an autonumber. When the list display it is sorting as if the Computer_ID is not a number but a character, 1,10,100 etc instead of 1 ,2, 3 etc. I have gone to the List Layout and changed Sort Where from ServerSide to ClientSide and it makes no difference. Is there somewhere else I'm supposed to set the sort order?

    Thanks

    -John

Why would you auto increment a primary key field as character and not integer in your database?

That's my question, why is the list sorting that way? The autonumber by definition is a number (and it is a number, a long integer) so that's why I'm asking the question, why is the list sorting like a character field? Is there something I need to do in a list that is different than a grid? It works just fine in a grid and always has but when I try going to a UX and try to use a list is behaves differently.

And to baffle me more...(1) when the List first displays it show the list sorted correctly for a fraction of a second and then goes to the incorrect sort (with me not touching anything) and (2) if I click on the Computer_ID heading it sorts correctly.

I don't know what's wrong with that list so I created another one and it works just fine. Go figure.

Didi your original SQL have a sort order on it?

Originally it did, then I removed it and it made no difference. Leaving the sort order blank in the Access query, I then put a sort order into the data source SQL statement of the list control - no joy, then I removed that and put the sort order in the client-side Order Definition as Computer_ID_fk|Number|Desc and still no joy. I created this particular UX just as a test because I was having a completely other set of issues on my "real" UX where the record wouldn't save because of an error along the lines of, "XXX field is not updatable..", yet I'd already set the field to not updatable and *unbound so why was it giving me that error? That's when I decided to create a new cleaner UX, to figure out what was going on and instead I run into this sorting issue. This is so frustrating.

I give up. Created another UX and another List control. No sort orders in sight. List sorts correctly. Click on the Computer_ID_Heading and it sorts in alpha order and not numeric.

Can somebody check to see if this works for them please? It's a simple example; an Access file with 26 records and a UX with a list control. When it opens it is sorted correctly, when I click on the ID heading it sorts as if the numbers are characters.

                    Thanks

This fixes the Issue but you should move to SQL Server moving forward.

Thank you Peter. Thank you very much. Please tell me it took you more than 5 seconds to figure that out so I don't feel like a complete fool for spending so much time on it. My excuse for not knowing nor seeing that is that I am new to UX's. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it :)

My next question then is, do I need to do that for all the fields?

                          Again, thanks so much.

Hey - its all one big never ending learning curve - always has been, always will be - the issue you have bumped into is the List Control is now so heavily featured with all kinds of work-arounds for various possibilities, its starting to get in its own way, that's why I use Viewboxes - but that's not for you just yet - keep asking your questions and the message board will help if it can. 5 minutes once I had your data in, you won't have the issue with character fields - but will bump into some on dates and logical (BIT) fields - but just ask. Glad I could help.
Also start using/learning SQL Server Express - makes things easier.
