Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Family tree

Firstly, I hope that you are all keeping safe.

I appreciate that my query is not the usual Alpha query. I have built a family tree with Alpha desktop. (Please see attached). The underlined names are linked to relevant pages.

I would now like to build something similar but on a web page. Problem is, I can't see how to draw the lines etc on an a5w page. I would prefer to create it via Alpha if possible and would welcome any ideas or pointers.

    Many thanks

    Larry

There are javascript classes available that can be used with Alpha Anywhere. Here is an example:
          https://flowchart.js.org/

This would require a bit of programming though on your part. There are also other ways to achieve this, but most require hand coding everything, whereas using a javascript class you program it once, and it builds the whole thing for you.

Thanks for JS advice. I will research it shortly. Meantime I have been fighting with simple HTML. I have to say it appears to be a very long-hand way of achieving my goal. It was so easy producing the desktop pages! I've even considered inserting the tree as a JPG and then placing hyperlinks all over the jpg, but it seems so primitive. Maybe there is an opportunity for an Alpha app here... But I will pursue the javascript. Many thanks

I wanted to give an update on this one, i.e. how to draw lines and boxes for charting etc in HTML was my issue. I did take the above advice but was finding the coding very laborious and often hit and miss. So I started researching again for another solution, i.e. an HTML compiler. Surely someone must have done it!

And then I found it! It's called 'SVG Family-Tree Generator' and it does exactly what I was looking for - and then some, i.e. a lot more. I simply fill in a few boxes and press the 'Process' button which produces my HTML which I copy and paste into a blank .a5w page and the job is done. Amazingly this advanced programme is absolutely free! Better still, the author - Tony Proctor - is very happy to help you get started. He also has a Facebook page with several videos which detail how to get started etc. His application also allows me to easily include hyperlinks to other pages where I can share my other family tree documents etc.

You can find Tony here: http://parallax-viewpoint.blogspot.c...rator-v50.html

If the data is all "known" you could easily create an image to use as the backdrop in a fixed layout (pdf?) and then drop the controls with the values where you would want them. To me that would be the easiest method however you could also use divs with relative layouts to data but again a fixed layout would make this a somewhat simple task.

One of the benefits of the SVG solution is, each time I add to the tree - which is daily - I simply 'Process' the SVG tree and copy and past the HTML it produces. And all of the URL references remain intact. I thought long and hard about using a background image, but I wasn't sure how to place my hyperlinks, especially as the image would have to be changed so regularly. Probably not a problem to someone more advanced than me...
