Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Get User's Local Date/Time -- How do you handle that?

    Web App running 7086 and Microsoft's SQL Server.

    Using the GETDATE() function in SQL has always been my go to strategy when capturing the date/time of some event. Of course that means it's the server's time that get's inserted/updated.

    I'm working on a nation wide web app at the moment where I'm needing to get the local user's time. A little JavaScript and populating the current user time is easy enough. But in this app are numerous automated (SQL triggers) INSERTS and UPDATES where GETDATE() is being used. Again, this is only server time. So naturally I'll need to store the user's time zone offset in the DB somewhere and when displaying the time data I can adjust that time as needed. Then there is AZ and HI ...no time change.

    My question to you folks is how are you handling this? Is there a better way than what I just described?

    I keep a table of users' timezone - it's part of their registration or profile, and it's actually for their Facility.

    Start with the timezones table:

    https://popsql.com/learn-sql/sql-ser...-in-sql-server

    Then I think you can follow this but I'll explain if you want:

    Code:
    args.set("Facility_ID", val(session.Facility_ID))
    sqlGet1 = <<%a%
    select T.sys_Time_Zone
    from Facility F
    left join TimeZones T on T.ID = F.Timezone_Adjustment_ID
    where Fac_ID = :Facility_ID
    %a%
    sqlGet2 = "SELECT [dbo].[LocalTime] (getdate(),'Eastern Standard Time',:Fac_Timezone) as newtime"

    cn.open("::name::oerca")
    cn.PortableSQLEnabled = .f.
    vFac_TimeZone = ""
    if cn.execute(sqlGet1, args)
    rs = cn.ResultSet
    if rs.nextRow()
    vFac_TimeZone = rs.data(1)
    end if
    end if
    cn.FreeResult()
    args.set("Fac_Timezone", vFac_TimeZone)
    cn.execute(sqlGet2, args)
    rs = cn.ResultSet
    Facility_LocalDT = rs.data(1)
    I used to try to handle things like daylight savings time with my own function - miserable to make work well. This does the job very nicely and worldwide.

    We discovered this approach originally from Dave Pinal but I can't find his article on the subject.

        Hi Mike,

        Just use javascript on the client device and GEO location data:
        https://blog.logrocket.com/detect-lo...-3d9523c011b9/

        There are many examples online and you don't need to do anything on the server or database.

          This may be old advice, but one of the reasons I didn't use client-side is that users don't always have their devices correct. An additional benefit of server-side functionality is that it can be used for automated procedures and other things that do not require a value from the client.

            Hi,
            I don't know javascript that well, how would I use this in a xbasic routine to get the json data?

            Thanks,
            Mike

              Hi Mike,

              You wouldn't use the method I suggested in xbasic, because xbasic is processsed on the server. My recommendation is to process on the client side without having to do anything with the server. Although you most likely want to save the results to a result set using a UX list or similar, which can be done using the built in Alpha Anywhere tools. Client side means on the actual users device, which means Javascript. The javascript would then interact with your user interface and then feed the information back to the server as it normally would (such as a UX List control update).

                  Hi Steve!

                  No doubt about what you are saying. There are definitely circumstances that would warrant a server side response. Since most of the work we do is based on mobile applications I tend to reply from that perspective, and it's very easy to do client side.
