Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Show data from SQL query on UX using xbasic

    I am querying sql data using xbasic because I cant get the query to work in the normal components (alpha doesn't seem to like some of the syntax)

    I got the query working using xbasic, and I'm getting the data I want from it, which is a varying sized list of pricing data that changes from product to product.

    The issue I'm having is taking this varying sized list of data and putting it onto the UX for the user to view. I have a half working xbasic function that tries to populate an empty repeating section with the rows from the data, but I am only getting the first row of data and nothing after it, and when I click on a new product it doesn't update with the new products data, it still has the data from the old product.

    Is there an easier way to do this? I just have a JSON with data and I want to show that data in rows on the users screen, but each product may have a different number of rows and I'm not sure what the easiest way to do this is.

    Here is where it is at currently. I have broken it a little with some recent changes by taking out some of the repeating section modifying functions. I'm wondering if theres an easier way to show this data than using and manipulating a repeating section? I see this dialog object setListColumnsAndPopulate but I haven't had success with it yet.

    function updateListPrices as C (e as P)
debug(1)
    dim jsToReturn as C = ""
    'Loop through all data and set it to each row
    if != "" then

dim data as P = json_parse(SQL_getListPrices(convert_type(, "N")))
    dim index as N = 1
    FOR EACH listprice IN data

if (variable_exists("data[index].price")) then

dim price as N = round(convert_type(data[index].price, "N"), 2)

else

dim price as C = "Error"

end if
    if (variable_exists("data[index].unit")) then

dim unit as C = convert_type(data[index].unit, "C")

else

dim unit as C = "Error"

end if
    jsToReturn = jsToReturn + "{dialog.object}.setValue('price:" + index + "',\"" + convert_type(price, "C") + "\");"
    jsToReturn = jsToReturn + "{dialog.object}.setValue('unit:" + index + "',\"" + unit + "\");"
    index = index + 1

NEXT

else

'clear all rows
    jsToReturn = jsToReturn + "{dialog.object}.setValue('price:" + 1 + "','');"

end if
    updateListPrices = jsToReturn
end function
    Here is the data I am trying to put into rows
    {      {
           "price": "3.50",
           "unit": "each",
          "price": "48.70",
          "unit": "case",
    If someone could point me in the right direction that would help me out a lot. I seem to be running in circles now. Should I just build an html table and set the innerHTML of a div to that data?

    Can you use a List control? In most cases, it's advisable unless you have a reason not to. And the syntax, once you have a model, is easy to repeat. Here's a model (insert standard complaint here about this board not keeping code formatting)

    function populate_LIST1 as c (e as p)
    dim cn as sql::Connection
    dim args as sql::Arguments
    dim rs as sql::ResultSet
    dim js as c = ""
    ' (set args here as needed )
    sql = <<%a%
    etc. etc. etc.
    cn.execute(sql, args)
    rs = cn.ResultSet
    json = rs.ToJSONObjectSyntax()
    json = crlf_to_comma(json)
    json = strip_trailing_char(json, ",")
    json = "[" + json + "]"
    js = <<%a%
    var listObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('LIST1');
    var _d = *json*;
    js = stritran(js, "*json*", json)
    populate_LIST1 = js
    end function

      Hi Nate,

      The quick answer (I think) is you didn't dim the data pointer the way you intended .
      dim data as P = json_parse(SQL_getListPrices(convert_type(, "N"))) should be dim data[0] as P = json_parse(SQL_getListPrices(convert_type(, "N"))).

      Hope this helps.

      Gregg is a great site to test and share sql code

        Thanks Steve!

        I got something working using that example, I'm still playing with formatting. The issue I'm currently having is the data successfully shows up in the list in the working preview, but when I publish it to the a5webroot folder and test it there nothing comes through. I'll have to keep trouble shooting. Might just be a server issue. I just keep running into issues with the behavior of the working preview not matching the published apps behavior.

        Thanks for your help!

          Thanks madtown I'll try that out with my old code and see if that fixes it, I liked the repeating sections look a lot better, and it worked when I published the app. Not sure why the list component method isn't working when published.
