Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    onchange loop

There's got to be a better way to do what I did. What I've done seems hokey.

I have a UX control (date control) that, when changed, it runs an ajax callback with this function:

    Code:
    FUNCTION Find_EndPayDay AS C (e AS p)

    if eval_valid("skip") then
if skip then 'this skips the second running of the function.
delete skip 'Since this function runs on the OnChange event, and we change the value
end 'at the end of the function, it goes in a loop. This is the way to
end if 'exit out of the loop.
    end if

    dim EndPayDay as d
EndPayDay = Find_PayPeriod(ctod(e.dataSubmitted.FILTER_PAYPERIOD)) 'Find_PayPeriod() is a server function that finds the last day of a particular pay period
    dim jcode as c = "{dialog.object}.setValue('FILTER_PAYPERIOD','" + dtoc(EndPayDay) + ");"
Find_EndPayDay = jcode 'write the javascript back to the browser

dim global skip as L = .t. 'Set this value as true so second running will be skipped

    END FUNCTION
It takes the date entered and re-writes the control to the last date of the pay period. However, when it sends the javascript back and re-writes, the control goes back to the "onchange" event because it was, in it's mind, just changed again. And that's how it would continue for ever if I didn't put in the "skip" code.

I just thought that if I posted this, maybe someone smart would point out something easy, and I could learn something.

    Thanks,
    Brad

Maybe try the onBlur (when the control loses focus) event. You can use the "old" (original) values and if the original doesn't equal the current values run your function. At the moment the JS for getting original values escapes me ...sorry. You can also get "old" (original) values in xbasic my using e.oldDataSubmitted.myControlName (e.dataSubmitted.myControlName for current values).

      Hi Brad,

I did a slight rewrite as shown before (sorry about moving the dims, but I like to see the variables defined up front).
As a side comment, you don't need to use a session variable for this.
I personally would set the value in the OnInitialize event and take away the possibility of user error.
If that truly is not an option, you could use a hidden field (datechanged) , set that value to something , and then
your if statement would start something like " If e.datasubmitted.datechanged <> "" then "
      Hope this helps.

      Code:

      dim EndPayDay as d
dim global skip as L = .f. 'Set this value as true so second running will be skipped
      dim jcode as c

if skip then 'this skips the second running of the function.
delete skip 'Since this function runs on the OnChange event, and we change the value
      Find_EndPayDay = ""
exit function 'at the end of the function, it goes in a loop. This is the way to exit out of the loop.

Thanks for these ideas. As I said, it was working but I appreciate the better ideas.
