Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Upload to AWS S3 and a thumbnail in one action

    Hi all, I have an application that saves images and since some of the images are quite large I want to save them in S3 but I also need to have a small thumbnail to display in a repeating section which gets saved to a blob field in the database. Right now the user has to click on two buttons that run the appropriate Javascript Action:
    1) "Image Upload" for a small version where I Scale the image before upload to make it small
    2) "File Upload - Amazon S3" where I upload the full version of the image to S3
    The user need to click both buttons and also needs to select the same file for each action. Of course I would like to combine these into one button and one file selection.

    I thought this could be easily done by just using the "Image Upload" javascript and using a Server-side event after upload to execute the upload to S3 with Xbasic commands. The Problem is, after going through the e object I cant find any reference to the path that the user selected for the file. Without the path I am out of luck. Any ideas or am I missing something.

    Thanks

    I think they talked about this in today's weekly webinar.
    There's an option for an xbasic function at the bottom of the configuration
    window for the upload to AWS/ALPHA online server. Capture.PNG

      Hello! We are currently doing a project where we need to do the exact same thing: upload images to S3 and also generate a thumbnail for each at the same time. Although the Xbasic call shown on the S3 Upload screen happens, the filename it passes only contains the name of the file the user selected but not it's full path. We've tried the a5_scale_imageFile(S3filename, S3thumbfilename, 0.1) but it doesn't do anything or even send back an error code. Not sure where to go from here. Have you managed to crack this one? Thanks for any help you can offer...

        In case anyone needs to do this, here is what works for us, running on Alpha Cloud. After the S3 upload, we invoke an Xbasic function to insert the uploaded filenames into our database and generate thumbnail images for each file in a separate "THUMBS" folder in our S3 bucket...

        'e._fileArray - a JSON array with information about each file that was uploaded.
        'Your code can parse e._fileArray to get an Xbasic property array.
        'each item in the Xbasic array will have these properties:
        'name - name of the file (e.g image1.jpg)
        'size - size of the file (e.g. 23435)
        'type - mime type (e.g. image/jpeg)
        'completed - .t./.f. -indicates if this particular file uploaded successfully
        'aborted - .t./.f. - indicates if the user aborted this file upload
        'targetName - target name on S3 (may be different than the name of the file that was uploaded)
        'targetServer - the server the file was uploaded to

        dim p as p
        'parse the JSON string to get a property array
        p = json_parse(e._fileArray)
        dim numfiles as n = p.size()
        if numfiles > 0 then
        dim fileprefix as c = "https://mys3bucketname.s3.amazonaws.com/"
        dim filename as c = ""
        dim thumbname as c = ""
        dim cs as c = "::storage::MyS3storageConnectionName"
        dim blobin as b
        dim blobout as b
        dim pin as p
        dim typein as c = ""
        dim result as p
        for i = 1 to numfiles
        if p[i].aborted = .f. then
        if p[i].completed = .t. then
        ' create the complete S3 filenames to be stored in our database
        filename = fileprefix + p[i].targetName
        thumbname = FILE.filename_parse(filename,"p") + "THUMBS/" + FILE.filename_parse(filename,"ne")
        ' --- do the database insert here ---

        ' if insert is successful, create the thumbnail file (NOTE: we want the filename without the S3 prefix)
        blobin = a5Storage_getItem_as_blob(cs,p[i].targetName,pin)
        typein = pin.contentType
        ' scale image to 1-inch high (NOTE: use of ImageMajik results in much smaller files)
        blobout = a5_scale_imageBlob(blobin, "jpeg", "jpeg", 0, 1, "inches", "Height", "Proportional", 0, 0, .T.)
        thumbname = STRITRAN(thumbname,fileprefix)
        a5storage_savedata(cs,blobout,thumbname,typein,result)
        ' you can reference "result.hasError" to verify successful completion
        end if
        end if
        next
        end if

          HI Tom, I tried the same approach using Xbasic with my project and it worked very well for small images but with large images (I think over 5mb if I remember correctly) something happens on on the cloud server and it times out and the thumbnail fails. I sent a ticket to Alpha and Selwyn replied that it would be worth it to use AWS Lambda for this operation. There are walkthroughs of how to do this exact operation on the AWS website and though it was very complicated to setup and required learning some new tricks, once I got it working it is wonderful and has never given me an issue since.

          Good Luck

            David, thanks for your reply! Since I only figured this out yesterday and haven't tested it with large files, it's great to get your input. I will definitely work on the Lambda approach if that's what Selwyn recommends and what is working for you!
