Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Storing array of values in UX to be imported into list

    Hello!

I am creating an app to order a list of products. The list of products shows up, they select one, and click the add to order button.

My first question is what is the best way to do this in your opinion? I have something working using repeating sections, but man are they a pain to work with, especially when deleting rows from the repeating section.

My new thought would be to just populate a list control using a data series and javascript function. The function would return an array of JSON data that holds the product name, price, etc.

My issue is, I'm not sure where to store the data of what they have added to the list. I need a middle area to store the data that the products list can add data to, and the checkout cart list can pull the data from.

I've looked into session variables and arguments, but it doesn't seem like that's what I'm looking for. I just want a page variable or something like that that I can modify as they add products, pull from in the other list, and clear when they're done. Is there something like that, a variable I can define that exists on the UX page that I can reference and modify. It only needs to be visible on the single UX page. This might be an obvious question but I've never tried to do anything like it and I can't seem to find the right answer.

    Thanks for any help!

What I'm wanting to do is something like this:
    1. User clicks an item in the products list, then clicks the add product button.
    2. The values from the list are I need are converted to a JSON and added to some array on the page. Maybe just a hidden static text or something? (this is the part I'm having trouble with)
    3. The data series populated checkout list uses javascript function which simply gets that array of JSONs and returns it to show the data in that list.
    4. The checkout cart list has a delete button to remove specific items from the array of JSONs.

Or maybe you just have an idea for a completely better way to create a process like this using something else, I'm open to any ideas. Just pointing me in the right direction would be a huge help, no need to go too in depth! Thanks!

Just submit the record on your selection to the database, then refresh the target List or Viewbox control, likewise to delete. So get the data into the database, then manipulate it.

Yeah that might just be the best solution. I didn't want to do that at first because there might be a lot of people using this simultaneously and I didn't want to put unnecessary load on the database. If I could just create the order, finalize it, then do one submission to the database I felt like that would be the cleanest and lowest impact on the database. Your way is probably the easiest and cleanest though. I'll try that. Thanks!

Alternatively, you could create a list to hold all of the data before making one submission to the database. The list would be a static list, which would be populated by the user's choices. Then make one AJAX callback, sending all the relevant info to the database.

Awesome, thank you both! That is exactly what I want to do. I am currently doing that with repeating sections, adding the data to the section and manipulating it there, but it has a lot of issues when you start deleting rows. I have been trying to use a list but running into walls, that video should help out a lot.

              Thanks again!
