Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Grid - Detail View - Tab Control & Panes

I have created a grid with a detail view. The detail view has a Tab Control with 5 Tab Panes. The information in the Grid part has a field for "County". To make it easy we
can call the county names A, B, C, and D. The user fills in information using 4 of the tabs. The fifth tab holds buttons for different report based on the County. On this fifth (Reports) tab
    I have :

    TabPane - REPORTS
    TabControl
    TabPane - A (ShowHide Upper(County) = "A")
    TabControl
    TabPane - STANDARD REPORTS
    Button
    Button
    ...
    TabPane - NON-STANDARD REPORTS
    Button
    Button
    ...
    TabControlEnd

    TabPane - B (ShowHide Upper(County) = "B")
    TabControl
    TabPane - STANDARD REPORTS
    Button
    Button
    ...
    TabPane - NON-STANDARD REPORTS
    Button
    Button
    ...
    TabControlEnd

    etc...

If I first click on the grid where county = A , the A pane shows and the reports for A are visible. If I now click on a row with county = B nothing happens but if I click it
again then pane B with its associated reports is shown. If I click the grid with county = C nothing happens but if I click it again then pane C shows, along with its associated
    reports.

Obviously I can't tell staff to click it twice so does anybody know why I have to click it twice?

I realize my question might be a bit convoluted so If I can provide any other details please let me know,

    Thank you.

Why are you using different tab panes under reports for county A, B, etc.

Instead, you should just surround the buttons with containers, then show/hide the containers based on the county. I think the fact that things are hidden under tabs which are hidden under tabs is making the system a little crazy.

However, I also don't understand - does each country require completely different reports? If not, and it's a filtering question, you can use the county in the filter instead. Then you show all the same buttons all the time and just filter reports on the county.

OR ... put the show/hide on each button. Then if some buttons are shared, you can show/hide based on the county and filter based on the county,

      Hi LG, thanks for replying,

This is a grid with a detail view and the tabs are in the detail view.

Each county has a set of reports - approximately 20-30. Each county's reports are different but each fall under the same heading of "Standard" and "Non-Standard" (and one or two more). If staff are on the grid where the county = "Montgomery" then when they click on the Reports tab it would automatically show the "Montgomery" tab and hide the others. On that Montgomery tab, once they click on the tab for "Standard Reports" they see the Standard Reports they can run that are all related to Montgomery. Likewise if they are on a record where the county is "Pasco" then when clicking the Reports tab they only see Standard / Non-Standard reports for Pasco.

Oh how I wish the reports were the same and I could just filter but unfortunately they aren't, all of them are different. :(

The reason I put them onto different tabs/panes to cut down on the show/hide. Tomorrow I will move the reporting piece to a UX and see if it works any better there.

Thanks for your input. I'll post back tomorrow with the UX results.

      -John

I used a UX using the same logic as I had on the grid and it works as I expected it should.

Thanks for chiming in LG. Appreciate it.
