Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Filter grid based on group name not group guid

    So I'm following Alpha's help on how to filter a grid based on the logged in user's security groups. Pic attached.

    It's straight forward enough except the values returned by the security group array argument are GUID's rather than the group name.

    In the table I want to filter I want to store the security group name, not the security group GUID as the GUID value doesn't mean anything to anyone looking at.

    How can I set the argument to the security group name?

    When the user logs in, you should set a session variable to the users group(s).

    Then use the session variable instead.

    However, if you are storing the Security GUID in the table, you could always join the table to the security groups table. That will give you the name to show in the group header. (or to your users in general.)

      Thanks. I was actually working on that so good to know I'm on the right track... although I can't quite get it working.

      When you login to my app it redirects to a tabbedui page. On Initialize of this page I'm setting the var session.usergroups to the list of groups that the user belongs to like this.

      dim uname as c
      uname = A5ws_GetCurrentUser()
      session.usergroups = A5WS_Get_User_Assignments(uname)

      This is working as I can set the value of the search field in my grid to =session.usergroups and it displays "Administrator" for example.

      Then in my grid I'm defining an argument :ARRAY_HOSPITALGROUP and I'm setting the value of the argument to a variable which I'm forced to "add" by the dialog (screenshot attached) so I'm also calling this variable "usergroups".
      In my table that the grid is based on I have the value in the Hospital field set to "Administrator" for 2 of the records.
      In my grid I have the filter set to Hospital = :ARRAY_HOSPITALGROUP but the grid is returning 0 records. Ultimately I will use the IN keyword as users may belong to multiple groups but in this case I know the user only belongs to one group. If I change the filter to Hospital = "Administrator" it returns 2 records as expected.

      One of the things that has me perplexed is the dialog that prompts me to add a variable name that the argument gets its value from even though I've already defined the variable in the On Initialized event of my tabbedui. Perhaps this is where I'm going wrong? When I add a variable via this dialog what is Alpha doing?

      All help appreciated.

        Not sure why, but I can't view your photo for some reason.

        However, when you set the value of the argument, you should be able to choose to set the argument to a session variable.

        Click Arguments, new Argument (or edit the one you have) then click new variable and select session variable. Then put the name of your session variable in the space provided. (Do not use session. - it already knows it's a session variable.)

        That should allow it to use your session variable.

        Note: If you only give your users a single group, then don't bother with array. Since there is only 1 value there is no array.

        If you are going to use array, then you should use "IN" not "="

          After sleeping on it I looked at it with fresh eyes and bingo... what an idiot.

          I was testing the value of the session var by setting the initial value of the grid's quick search field to the session var. Of course the quick search was firing as the grid loaded and therefore the records I was expecting to see were not returned because the hospital group field was not defined in the grid search.

          Thanks for your help Larry, it gave me confidence that I was on the right track and I now know how to filter a grid by the logged in user's group(s).
