Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    List and DBF

I know i have posted on this before, but could not find the previous posts.
Do Lists work fully with DBF files.
I have a typical list, with automatically generated detail section, however using the save button updates the list, but the syncronize button does not update the dbf.
Anyone have an updatable list using a dbf?
    Thanks
    Terry

About a year ago I did some testing of a disconnected app using dbf files. It worked fine but I had to create a connection string using an ODBC driver. DavidK had a post explaining how to set it up the ODBC connection. I can't seem to find it right now but I'm sure it's still in the message board.

I've attached the UX component and DBF I used to test using DBF's in a disconnected app. I just briefly tried it and it still appears to work. The connection string is in the list properties.

I was not even looking at a disconnect app, but I will have a look.

Terry, under Data Source Type, I just noticed that the DBF option has information entered. These parameters can be ignored as the table doesn't even exist. The connection string is set up using a SQL Data Source. Please let me know how you make out and if you need to make any changes. Thanks

Hi Terry, I apologize for so many replies. My memory isn't as good as it use to be. DavidK's post had all the steps to get the connections string correct. I've attached a png to help you along. The Data Source is DBF. You then need to click on "Edit". Select DBF. Next click on "Configure". Under version select dBase 5.0. Lastly, you need to click on "Select Directory" and point to the location of your data files. I just noticed there is a button named "Select Indexes". I didn't do anything with that button but maybe I should have.

One last thing. Under Options, I checked Show Deleted Rows.

I followed through the instructions, but also required a new mapped drive.
Connection is shown as success and I can select the table, however it does not show any fields to select in the field list.
              Thanks

I've seen where the field names were missing once. Not sure what I did but it's working now. I'm using Build 2999. I just tried it in the latest stable build and the fields are visible there too. Did you try the example with the data file I sent you?

                    Your example seems to work.
So went back to the configuration & thought that to get the the of fields I would first need to set the SQL select statement, but when trying to do this i get the following error:-
                    ODBCError.PNG
                    Thanks

I have read the article, but my table & field names are 18 characters
I will try another test table with some shorter names, similar to your test, to see if that helps
                        thanks

I have tested this & it seems the ODBC method you have described only works if the Filename & Fieldnames are all 10 characters or less.
Unfortunately the table I am trying to use is too entrenched in our desktop environment to change, although I may be able to do this over time.
The link that you sent no longer has the fixes available as this was some time ago, so its surprising that they are not already in the usual windows patches or is it that these files that need updating are in Alpha?
If you can help on the patches, that would be great, otherwise its a long term project for me.
                          Thanks

I just tried this myself and I agree, the file name has to be 10 characters or less. I tried some other choices but nothing I tried would work. I Googled your error message which led me to the link I posted. Hopefully someone else can offer a solution but for now, it looks like the filename must be no longer than 10 characters.

Selwyn has sent an explanation that the long names used in Alpha are dealt with, within Alpha ddd files so there is no odbc update to help here.
I am working round this now by using some xbasic functions to update the dbf records
                              thanks
