Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    PDF_Fillinfields_merge issue

I use PDF_Fillinfields_merge in a few places on my app, but it has recently stopped working.

I recently upgraded to the December 2020 version and that appears to be when the break happened. I can't yet upgrade to a later version, but I don't see anything about it in the release notes.

If anyone else out there is using it, could you please let me know if it still works for you in any version Dec 2020 or later?

It does return an error that looks like this, but the error code implies that the file is not found - and I have verified that the starting file is there.

I also wonder if it is a security issue - the file starts outside of the application root. But it has been working fine that way for many years.

    Error executing Ajax callback function 'Booking_Sheet' Error reported was: {"errno":"ENOENT","code":"ENOENT","syscall":"spawn C:/Program Files (x86)/a5V12 ApplicationServer/pdftk.exe","path":"C:/Program Files (x86)/a5V12 ApplicationServer/pdftk.exe","spawnargs":["c:\\mypdffiles\\amail\\TripAmailItems.pdf","fill_form","C:\\Users\\ADMINI~1\\AppData\\Local\\Temp/temp_data1617817834115ptu7wj.fdf","output","c:\\mypdffiles\\amail\\TripAmailItems_2141.pdf","flatten"],"cmd":"C:/Program Files (x86)/a5V12 ApplicationServer/pdftk.exe c:\\mypdffiles\\amail\\TripAmailItems.pdf fill_form C:\\Users\\ADMINI~1\\AppData\\Local\\Temp/temp_data1617817834115ptu7wj.fdf output c:\\mypdffiles\\amail\\TripAmailItems_2141.pdf flatten"}

I had a problem with this and sent a bug report. This was Selwyn's response:

Alpha Anywhere Bug Report pdf_fillInFields_merge fails:
there is no hotfix required. there is no bug in AA per se (although there was a bug in the Installer)
the issue was that the installer was not installing the pdftk.exe file. once you manually copy the file into the executable folder, the function works.
so, all that you need to do is ensure that the pdftk.exe file exists in the folder where you have AA installed.
pdftk.exe is installed in the correct folder on dev and web server.

      Larry,
Did you get this working after Selwyn's response?

The issue first showed up for me in Release 7295-5848. It did not happen in previous releases.
In looking at my notes, I believe copying pdftk.exe to the correct folders fixed it for me.
But in my application I abandoned pdf_fillInFields_merge altogether.

So, the long and short of it is: Alpha is expecting the executable file to be in the program directory. You used to have to install it as a separate install but it is now being installed as part of Alpha's install package. So if you were using it and had installed it manually you can copy the executable over, but if you install the current version of Alpha it will install for you.

For reference: the exe file by default was installed in c:\program files\pdftk server\bin. (At least on my laptop.)

You can copy that file to the Alpha program directory if you are not moving to the latest Alpha yet.
