Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    I got a shock today using the nightly build - .setArgumentValue depreciated

    I have 100's of components using this.. any comments appreciated.

    alert(v);
    //DEPRECATED - you can only change argument values in server-side code
    {dialog.Object}.setArgumentValue('CUSTOMERID','BOLID');
    Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

    Get busy ...

    I know, that's not helpful. In all seriousness though I was hoping Alpha would continue to support the old method for a while and not just pull the rug out. I too have countless UX's that use the "old" method.

    There was another thread on here about how the Server-Side code to set an argument has changed too.

      especially when there is nothing about in the release notes I can find! Nothing in the pre-release notes

      This is all I managed

      HTML Code:
      UX Component - Arguments - Setting Values on the Client-Side - The value of arguments in a component are typically set on the server-side. Now, a new method - .setArgumentValue() - allows you to set the argument value on the client-side. After an argument value has been set on the client-side, when the next Ajax callback occurs, the argument will have a new value when the server-side code is executed.

      Syntax

      {dialog.Object}.setArgumentValue(argName,argValue)

      Where argName is the name of the argument you want to update. The argName must be uppercase and the argument name in the component definition must also be uppercase.

      argValue is the new argument value. It is always a string value. If the argument was defined as being some other type, when the argument value is set on the server-side the value will be converted to the correct type.

        It still works.

          It still works (kind of). Using the setArgumentValue() method is only changing the client-side value of the argument. The actual value of the argument is stored in ENCRYPTED form and it is impossible for you to set the value of the ENCRYPTED argument using client side code. Arguments are (and always have been) a server-side concept and the only way to change an argument value is in server-side code. Alpha has simply removed the ability to set arguments in client-side javascript. When an ajax callback is made arguments are initialized from the encrypted values, (not the raw values which can be changed in client side code. )

            This is now listed in the pre-release notes today ...

            deprecated.jpg

            I don't 'think' I'm using this method, but my application is quite large and has been built, changed and grown over many years.
            Does anyone know if there is an easy way to search an application to see if is used any place?

              Yes I got this explanation while asking Selwyn about it, while it’s some work to address, it was a weakness in public facing sites and needed addressing, so I’m just going to make the changes.

                How can I search to find out where I might have used this method? Is that possible?

                  I don't think there's a global search feature so you'll probably have to do it component by component. Edit the component and switch to the Xbasic tab at the bottom then search for the method. I've never really had an issue since the only place I reset an argument value is in the afterDialogValidate server-side event so I'm already on the server and don't need to do another ajax callback.

                    This ought to help find code needing to be changed.
