Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Time to replace the laptop

So it's time to replace my Dell XPS laptop with 8 gigs ram. Since my last purchase zoom and others have become a significant tool in working on applications. The problem I'm looking to solve is when running any video software and trying to load a live preview everything crawls. So what is a good configuration to improve performance on rendering uxs both on and off zoom type systems. Is it more memory overall or more specific graphics memory or more cores...or all of the above.

    Thanks Tom

If your laptop came with 8 gigs I'm assuming it's fairly old then. If I were you I'd hunt around ebay for a 2019-2020 refurbished laptop. I love Dell. The 2018 XPS 15 is what I'm using. I upgraded it to 32 gigs of RAM but even at 16 gigs it ran everything well. I use it with three monitors. I can develop, watch a HD movie on Amazon, and take a Zoom/Skype video call with no problems. Of course, doing all of that at the same time takes a lot of bandwidth. But my laptop has no trouble with it.

        I use hp envy 17.

        it's a 17-inch laptop, mainly I don't use another screen.
Sometimes I like to work in Starbucks, so 17 inch screen is a must for me.
I don't have a prb running youtube, zoom and alpha together,

        Have a nice day

I use a Mac desktop and laptop and got sick of Parallels running so slowly and killing my resources. I now rent a ZebraHost server, do all my developing on it, and when I go somewhere, I do not need to transfer files to my laptop; I just remote into the ZH server and go to work.
You can get a Chromebook and still develop in Alpha. I am not necessarily endorsing the Chromebook, just using it as an example.

          Hope this helps.

            Hi Jay
I had tried approach in the past but often I'm on poor internet connections. I also found the setup a bit slow. But that was several years ago. I did also use it when a client wanted access to the development environment as part of a contract requirement.

So I've settled on the Dell XPS 15 with 32gigs Ram. It's another pound to carry in my backpack but the larger screen is better. It also has face recognition for signing in that works nicely.

I'm still deep in setup mode but should have it ready for testing by Monday.

            Thanks
            Tom
