Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calendar layout

Does anyone know if the "calendar layout" of a List control is still in development and hopefully going to be released at some point. It looks very nice in the pre-release notes but I see no further mention of it for quite a while. I have personally been using the calendar created by Jim Coltz and it is very nice. It works great on desktop browsers, and does work on mobile too but certain features do not work on mobile, like drag and drop. I would also welcome any suggestions on any other calendar people are using that they would recommend.

I'm working on a new app right now where it would be awfully nice to have a real calendar in the IDE. Regardless, I'll be checking this one out soon: https://fullcalendar.io/

Very interested to hear how you manage integrating fullcalender.io, mikeallenbrown . If Alpha's calendar is still in beta in a few months I will be looking to go down the same road myself.

Don't hold your breath! ... it'll be some time (several months likely) before I really take a deep dive into it. If it's a success I'll share my findings here in the forum.

I appreciate the comments. I just looked at the fullcalendar demo. It does not appear to have a responsive layout. Am I missing something? Why is this the one that you would pursue?

Sorry, I take that back. At first, I looked at its responsiveness in my desktop browser, by simply reducing its width. Didnt seem like a good look. However, on a mobile device, it is responsive, has drag and drop, etc.

I will probably not have a full sized calendar for any mobile device. It just would be too hard to use. Too small, etc. For my use case office staff would use it, on a desktop, for scheduling but folks in the field would have other means, maybe a list, of viewing their schedule on a mobile device. For context I typically don't use "real" mobile apps that you'd download from Google Play or Apple. I use subdomains (https://mysite.com/mobile) for that. Makes it easy that way.

                  Since you asked for suggestions:

Facing a similar problem a few years ago, I came across a detailed tutorial from Alpha for using the date control for a full calendar. As has been said, one of the problems in building calendars is formatting the display to give the needed information in limited space. With this method, it is easy to control what is displayed and how. I used a view that takes 1 or more of the first characters from selected fields for display. The result is a calendar that has a uniform appearance and is easy to read quickly for my users' purposes. It may not be for all use cases, but it is worth a look.

I included a link to the tutorial and pic of my calendar for the month.

                  Good luck.

Interesting. Does that support drag and drop? And drag and drop on mobile?

It does not support drag and drop. Don't think of this as a calendar app. It is more a calendar display. Whatever functionality you need, has to be built. For example, to add an event, you need to make the component for that. While that may seem a disadvantage, my experience has been that it actually gives great flexibility. Mine does not even use a dedicated events table. Rather, a future date field was added to the existing notes table. The same note field is used to hold the future event code (limited in mine to two characters) as holds the notations taken when the event occurs. Before the date it may just have "px" (for preliminary hearing). This is displayed on an editable "events page"(grid) on the day of the event with editable notes fields. After the date, the same field might have, "px Conducted hearing. Held to answer. Needs investigations." For my use, attorneys notating and tracking court appearances where the notation has to include the same appearance type as the calendar, it works perfectly and is a real time-saver on busy days. I attached a picture of my personal events page for today. (I gotta go!!!!). Note that only the first two characters of the "notes field" are displayed on the calendar. The "Date" button opens the calendar carrying in the client id as an argument that is then carried into the new event form opened from the calendar. With this page, attorneys can notate, add future dates, and bill for all cases on that day without ever opening the individual client's pages.

As said, this may not be for all use cases, but if you want something really custom, it can be kinda cool.
