Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    500 Internal Server Error - "Extra characters at end of expression"

    So, I've been having this issue for the past couple of days and I cannot for the life of me figure out why I am getting this error and what is causing it..

    weirderror.jpg

    I can't find anything similar to it in older forum postings as I usually am able to do.. Has anyone run into this particular error and if so, did you find a solution for it?

    This error occurs shortly after I login with the login component (which authenticates and sends me to the appropriate index.a5w page). The main component tried to load, I can see my button controls and everything, however, about 3-4 seconds pass and I'll get the popup which will let me click ok 3 times and never loads my component fully..

    I thought that maybe it was an issue with the index.a5w page, so I deleted then re-created - no dice..

    Ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated!

      It is hard to debug because it could be anywhere in your login process. Most likely some xbasic somewhere. You have to isolate and the best way is to try your components individually in LivePreview. But that does not always help. Another way that is often overlooked, is to make sure you have set up your LOGS, especially the "stack" log and then fire your process, go inspect the logs. If you are working on Localhost, the logs are configured at Web > Development Server on the Control Panel. You can also cut a video to show us where it breaks, etc.

        After some further investigation, I realized that if I publish components with List Controls, I get the error.. If I delete the list controls and re-publish, the error goes away and I am able to see the rest of my component. I've tried to re-create the list controls and leave them barebones, no styling, etc.. and same thing. For some reason the server isn't liking List Controls as I am able to publish everything but. Any clue, Steve? If cutting a video will help further, I will be happy to do so.

        Initially, I thought that the issue was in the login process as well.. So I looked into that first and eliminated the login process entirely - same error. :(

          Just out of curiosity - published to a web server? Or local host?

            Web server. Separate from my development server.

              Does this ONLY happen on the web server? Can you recreate the error on your development machine? You aren't by chance running a different build on your app server than you're running on your development machine are you?

              You can compare the __a5RunDialog.a5w file from the webroot directory on your application server to the one on your development machine.

              If after comparing, they both look the same and if you can actually recreate the problem on your development machine open up your __a5RunDialog.a5w file (in your dev machine's webroot) and place a debug in it like below:
              Code:
              [COLOR="#FF0000"]debug(1)[/COLOR]
              [COLOR="#00FFFF"]delete x_out
              dim x_out as p
              x_out = a5_ajax_dialog2(tmpl)
              if variable_exists("x_out.Ajaxresponse") then
              	?x_out.Ajaxresponse
              end if [/COLOR]
              The blue is the code as it already exists in the file.

              Line 169 is actually the line with tmpl in it.

              You should be able to explore the variables in your debugger and it should throw the error there as well. After you save the file, the machine will recreate it without your debug(1) line in, everytime you go to live preview (and maybe working preview too). The solution is to keep the file open in your text editor and save it after you go into live or working preview.

              You may also be able to click on the Xbasic tab at the bottom of your UX builder and look what's in tmpl in the UX's that are causing an issue.

                Interestingly enough, I cannot reproduce the error on the development server - so yes, it's only occurring on the production web server. I haven't compared the builds - thanks for this suggestion, I will look into it and post back as to what I find.

                  -Jinx-,

                  I wanted to report back that the difference in builds turned out to be the issue.. Apparently my app server was significantly older than my dev. Kudos to you for spotting that.

                    Glad I could help. Having differing builds can cause a lot of weird issues like that.
