Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • File Update and Download using List and List Detail View

AlphaAnywhere is a lovely little tool but the Alpha brings out new features in an incomplete state and it is starting to make me look at other tools on the market.

I love new List and List Detail version feature. It's fast and allows for easy and and efficient linking to other data/lists/tables. But I can't seems to find a way to allow me to upload files via this new tool. IT allows for image upload as they build the extra option to do that. But other generic files are just not supported.

Did anyone found a way to upload files using List and Detail view or do I need to build an extra component just to do that? This seems like a slow workout.

Thanks to anyone who might be able to point me in the right direction.

    Dan

The list control is for lists. Your question is like asking why we can't use reports to update a table -- it's not the right tool.

So instead, add some other "correct" control - such as a button - to your UX then use Action Javascript to create your file upload.

Steve. Do you know that List Control allows for image upload? List Control in latest version of Alpha is a bit more then just a "list".

There is nothing wrong with my initial post.

And by the way, having a report that is active and links back to live data with option to update is not such a bad feature to have. Modern applications already do that.

        - don't know what this means. Images and file uploads and down loads work fine - watch these 2 quick video's.

Re: File Update and Download using List and List Detail View

          I'm referring to this functionality

          http://www.alphasoftware.com/video-l...mage%20capture

          http://ajaxvideotutorials.com/V12Vid..._capture_1.swf

Pete I'm familiar with the old way of doing this. But it's not very flexible and as you can see yourself interface is not as responsive. I find the new List control with Detail view is much faster and allows for easier linking and updating of multiple tables.

Re: File Update and Download using List and List Detail View

I'm working on this same issue and am curious if anyone has found a workaround. I understand that I could open a different component that was bound to a table where I wanted to save the file and use the current action javascript to upload the file, but what I am hoping to do is upload a file to a field that is in the detail view of a list. I can get the file reference field to save correctly and sync back to the list and server but when I go to the folder to check if a file actually uploaded it hasn't. I'm assuming this is because the file itself hasn't been uploaded/saved due to the fact the File Download/Upload control isn't actually bound to the list (which I don't believe is possible as it doesn't come up as an option when you go to the field map).

I understand Dan's frustration with the fact there is a specific action javascript for image upload to the list detail view but not for other files. I don't mind doing it the other way but do find it would be an easier transition if there was a way to get at the file to save it to the server (since the File Upload/Download control doesn't work with the detail view) and then just save the file reference to the list maybe using xbasic.

            - don't know what this means. Images and file uploads and down loads work fine - watch these 2 quick video's.

In your file upload video I am assuming when you clicked the "+ Add Script" button you opened up a UX component that was bound to a table where the file reference was being saved and then you went to the "Script Library" and the list updated with the new script, is this correct? Or was the file upload actually the detail view of the script library?

Re: File Update and Download using List and List Detail View

              Pete,

In your example are you using a list with a detail view?

Also, you seem to be saving the file to a new table entirely.

The issue I am having is saving the file to a field in the list table in the detail view.

Could you please explain more about how YOUR upload is setup?

Re: File Update and Download using List and List Detail View

Asked Selwyn about this after trying it myself as a Detail-view.
                    this is not a bug.

file upload in a list/detail view (using the file upload action in action javascript) is not supported.

file upload is only supported in a 'traditional' data bound ux. it looks like you have tried to bind your ux to a database and also use the list/detail view, but you did not complete it. you have turned on databinding, but you did not define the afterdialogvalidate event to actually perform the crud operation.

instead, it looks like you are using the list/detail view to perform your crud operations. which is fine -- but you just won't be able to use file upload action javascript in this context.

the reason we don't support file upload in a list/detail view is that there is really no concept of uploading files (other that images or videos, or audio recordings) in a mobile application.
how would you select a file to upload?

in theory, i suppose you could use this action to do a file upload.
then, once the file was uploaded you use the afterUploadComplete event to set the filename of the file that was uploaded to the 'filename' field in the List's detail view.

Very curious about this above statement, If I use the "File Upload" action javascript to upload the file, does the file get uploaded to the server (being I have auto upload turned on) automatically or is it only uploaded once a bound UX has its data saved to the tables in the server side afterDialogValidate event?

I know how to get the filename saved into the detail view, but what it sounds like I need is a way to get at the "data" of the file so I can upload it to the server (maybe using xbasic) if it isn't automatically being uploaded once the file is selected using the file select window (which I don't think it is as I'm not seeing them on my server).
