Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Grid with 100,000 record loading issue

    Hi

I have a grip that pull 100,000 rows from back end SQL Database and it take long to load when opening the page.

Is there any way to prevent the Grid from loading all of the data when opening? So that i can decide what to search later instead of loading all at once when i started the grid.

    I saw the functions

    function onSQLSelectQuery as v (e as p)

'This event fires when the Grid performs a query to get a resultset of records to show in the Grid.

'e.sql = The SQL Statement that Alpha Five has computed. If you don't set e.handled to .t., then this statement will be executed to get the resultset for the Grid.

Please advice is it possible to set something in this event to prevent the Grid from running the SQL?

    Regards
    Phan

Re: Grid with 100,000 record loading issue

How long is too long? How many fields in a record? What is max size on record?
In my experience grids do not load all records when opening. A grid I have based on 20,000 records, 14 fields per record, about 100 characters/digits per record that loads more or less instantly.
Maybe build a new component and with all defaults and test again. I suspect there may be something wrong.

Agree with Garry we use 500,000 and close to instantaneous.

Also filtered on the server as a row expander is very quick.

Are you using a table or a slow to build view?

By default the grid includes a limit on records returned. 10 is the default. What do you have that property set to?

I use UNION ALL to many select ..... and the query itself take 2 min to run in Server. I try using Store Procedures and it work on Server, but failed on Alpha once I use UNION ALL

Re: Grid with 100,000 record loading issue

            Hi Phan Sin Tian,

If your query is taking 2 minutes in the Server, then it will take longer when trying to show it in any client application, AA, .Net, etc.

You must optimized your query at the server level first. If you are using MS SQL Server, run your query including the Actual Execution Plan and see if you are missing any indexes that will be needed to optimize your query. Once you get the query properly optimized, then your client application will show your data faster unless you need to fix any performance issue with your client application, again not matter if you are using Alpha Anywhere, .Net, etc.
