Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Listview nested objects not available in list builder.

Hello all, I am looking for help using the Listview control. I really think the list view is the right approach, not a view box but I am open to arguments. Please see my loom video here https://loom.com/share/6fe220f5d7034c74a239b73c2d3e4682

I am using custom data source in the listview builder to call a function that makes an api call for array of data. Think banking transactions. You have a bank app on your phone and when you look at the transaction history you see multiple different transactions. That is exactly what I am doing. The api returns several top level objects. One of those objects called results has more data objects under that object. That object has a data object that hold each transaction's data for example transaction amount, available balance, balance, etc.

Here is the code that returns the values. I have tried several different iterations. I can see what I want in the debugger pic attached. also, you can see in the list builder pic attached I only have top-level objects. I need the objects that is in the data field also circled in pic.
    Example Object levels:
    • apiData.result
      • Data
        • Amount
        • Avail_balance
        • Balance
      • Account_no
      • Created date
      • ID etc…

A list is designed to have one row per line. What you want is a list of upper level values, then you click on an upper level value and then maybe show another list that has the second level values. So you could populate list 1 with the Account No and Created Date, the populate list 2 with the Data for that account.

In order to get what you want all into one list, I think you need to mess with the data more in xbasic. For instance, you could create a json that has a row for each row in the top level AND each row in the lower level.

So each line of the json variable would include the following values:
    Account_No, Created_Date, Amount, Available_Balance, Balance (From record 1)
    Account_No, Created_Date, Amount, Available_Balance, Balance (From record 2)

    etc.

That would flatten out the data for the list to see. Then you could group it in the list. But I think you would have to flatten that out manually. I do not believe there is a direct function that will do that for you.

Alternatively, it might be easiest to save the data into related tables then just work from the tables instead.

Thank you for the reply Larry. I understand what you are saying and I can do that. however I cant access the contents underneath the second level objects. What's weird is that if I open the same function in a viewbox all of the fields that I want regardless of levels are available. Why can a viewbox see all of the content whereas a list cant? I know some will say just use the viewbox then. My alpha experience has been on list so far though and I was told that for data arrays like bank transactions that list is the preferred method because its light compared to view box.

I also dont think a viewbox has a detail view which is something I really would need. please let me know if I am wrong.

I don't know viewboxes all that well either, so I can't help you on that. But despite they share some similarities, viewboxes are entirely different animals from lists.

I don't know if you have used grids, but lists are in some ways mobile replacements for grids. They are a quick way to show a list of items.

But in your case that list contains sublists which you can't easily handle inside a single list control. A viewbox, as people have said, is better designed to handle that.

As to accessing the information in the data variable, you have to do all of that in xbasic.

In Debug, it is showing you the name of the variable you need to access the data.

So, in xbasic, you could reference apidata.result[i].data.avail_balance for instance.

Again, you won't see that many levels from the LIST, but you should see it in xbasic.

I remember doing that video now - yes it will give your the access to the array you are looking for.
