Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Using arguments in a list control

I have a list control that uses portable SQL as the data source. This has an argument which is based on a session variable created in the onDialogInitialize event to filter the records

    whatID.PNG

My problem is that you have to run working preview or refresh the page twice before the correctly filtered results are returned. (If I remove the filter the list renders as you would expect but, of course, all the records are returned)

Any insights that would help me understand why this is happening and how I can solve or workaround the problem would be much appreciated

    Many thanks

I use the on change event and it works perfectly. Try writing the session variable to a hidden field and using the on change event. I always use server side filtering

Hi Michael. Many thanks. Please would you mind providing a few more details? Do you mean the "OnControlChange" event? What Javascript do you use? All the best. Julian

Re: Using arguments in a list control

Julian, I believe this may be just a timing issue during testing. You're probably setting the session variable close to the same time your list is being rendered... it's just that your session var isn't there yet. Since you mention working preview this makes sense because you're testing your component. In real use, your session var will most likely be set prior to the List rendering. If you session var will be changing, you'll need to perform a refreshdata on the list.

You need to run the page twice because the 2nd time the page is run your session var is now established... because of the 1st run.

          Hi Julian

I am busy but will try to send info on Monday morning.

Set the value of a field (Session) to the session variables value. As David mentions make sure the session variable is available. Then use the onChange event. This is a field event like click double click.

I will explain this clearly early Monday.

          Michael

Re: Using arguments in a list control

On reading David's reply I think you can simply refresh the list using the client side event "onInitializeComplete" . Run a server side list refresh.

I can be found on 01323 895337 until 13:00 in case you have problems

              Hi Michael and David
Many thanks for taking the trouble to respond to this which I really appreciate
              I've tried:
              - Putting the session.id into a textbox and a server-side filter list in the onChange event
              - Trying to refresh the list using {dialog.object}._refreshListData('list1') in the onInitializeComplete event
Sadly, neither of these have worked so I'm clearly doing something wrong but I don't know what
Would either of you know if there's a way of ensuring the onDialogInitialise event has completed before the rendering of the List control starts?
              Once again, many thanks
              Julian

Re: Using arguments in a list control

I put an alert message alert("complete"); in onInitilializeComplete

                The list has rendered.

                Try this method

                  Hi Michael
Many thanks for your kind offer but I've found that the easiest way to get the results I'm looking for is to populate the List control using a 'Custom' data source
                  All the best
