Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

List Control Related Records Icon - Row Expander

When you embed list control inside another list control which has related records, Alpha easily allows you to control this by adding an icon a user clicks to expand and show this related content. A nice way to present and show related records.

However, I don’t see an easy way to control if this icon is shown if there are no unrelated records. It’s not a very good user experience if a user has to click each record to see if there are indeed related records to see.

With a grid, I would use the server side event to show row expander icon. I would then perform a sql call and get a count of total related records. If 0, set row expander to false. If 1 or more, true. Issue solved, icon only shown if there are records to see

Been searching and can’t seem to find a comparable way to do to a list in the UX. I am thinking I am not the only one who wants this functionality and hopefully has a solution my level of coding can handle :)

You already know the row count for both lists if the row count t for the embedded list don't show the child.

Show a pic of your List.

I put a 2 panel cards side-by-side. I put a list on the left one, and then use tab controls on the right. Keeps detail view organized by breaking it into tabs (User info, billing, shipping, etc.) I'll put a child list in one of the tabs as well.

That’s a great idea for a layout. I’ll post up images of my app tonight when I am back at my desk and show the use case of what I am referring to. My post may not have done an adequate job of describing what I am trying to achieve. I’ll post images of the grids I have used showing the row expander icon in the older grid only appearing when there are child records and the “child list” icon in the newer UX list control that appears on all records of a list, regardless of whether child records are present.

I like your idea of using two panel cards and tabs within to organize. Most of my users are in a desktop, but it also seems that layout would have an advantage on lower resolution as you could hide the panel card if it doesn’t fit and have user click over to it on smaller screens.

Hopefully this is a little clearer.

In my app, old screens using grids that I am trying to update to UX's using lists. If a row has related child records, I show the row expander. You will note row expander only is shown if child records exist. User doesnt have to click each and every row to see if a child is there. In this application, I have documents users have uploaded for these records. If you click a row, you can see the documents "attached" for that record and then view the document. Not very useful if they had to click every record to know if there is a document. In our use case, these documents are usually quotes or technical cut sheets for that inventory item being specified.

Grid with Row Expander showing child records exist:

Grid with Row Expander , you know expanded showing related grid:

          Row Expander 2.png

New UX showing embedded list with a row in List Control Expanded where a child record exists. Note all lines show an icon to expand. My question is can you remove this icon if there are no related items in the list for that row. Or maybe at least add an image or button that tells you "hey, there are child records".... I could then use that image or button to expand the row or pop a panel with the related records.

Ok so Invoice 2 has no transactions to audit it - it's just an invoice for $15K, so we need to indicate that - i'll take a look in the morning.

I was lucky enough to come into Alpha after grid components were replaced with lists, and panel cards were being pushed hard by Alpha as the future. I am attaching an image of how I layout most list UXs. I am not a big fan of in-place editing for large lists, but I like them for smaller child lists. Large lists have many text boxes, and tabs make the layout easier to navigate. I have attached images for you to see what I am explaining. The last image is an in-place editable child list.

Also, I like where the grids show there are child records with the + symbol as well. I am following this post to see if anyone knows of an answer.

What does -' When you embed list control inside another list control which has related records,' mean?
                Are all your Lists CRUD?

What does -' When you embed list control inside another list control which has related records,' mean?

List Control, Detail View, Detail View Position - set property to InsideList-BeneathListRow. Put another List Control in a container, then set the detail view container to the variable name. Link the two lists up with an argument.
You then in list layout move the <RowOpen/CloseIndicator> over into shown columns.

List then behaves like a row expander in the grids, showing an arrow that allows you to drill down into related lists. My aim would be to hide this <RowOpen/CloseIndicator> if there were no related child records.

Are all your Lists CRUD? yes

Starting to feel like the best way to deal with this is add a column to my parent list that is true or false to indicate it has a child record. Maybe when a child record is added elsewhere, set its value to T. Then have an image or something on the row that lights up to tell user "hey, I have children" I am sure if I was better there would be a way to loop through the parent records when the form opens and just set it for each row on open.
