Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Embedded UX with lists not releasing memory

    I am using a web app with panel cards. It has multiple embedded UX components. A couple of these have 6 lists in the component. It quickly gets to the point when I load active panels where it locks up. Is there a way to release a loaded active panel when I switch to a new one?

    And you wonder why it doesn't work.

    You are better saying what you are trying to do.. and asking 'How do I do it!'

      If I log into the system and activate either one of the panels with multiple lists, it works fine. If I then activate the other list, it either never loads or goes extremely slow. I am assuming that the program is using too much memory and therefor cannot process the second panel. I would like to know if there is a way that I can release or remove the active panel that I just left so it allows me to run the second active panel. How do I do it?

        I'd build a view and bring everything I needed into 1 list.

          To answer your original question: There may be legitimate use cases for embedded objects but I avoid them. I load child components either into panels or into DIVs. Occasionally I too want to rid the component from the browser's DOM and to do this I use {dialog.object}.destroyChildComponent(). Here is a link to the documentation on the method: https://documentation.alphasoftware....t%20Method.xml

          The documentation doesn't mention it but you need to explicitly name your child component. Also, here is a sample of how you would write the code:

          Code:
          var cObj = {dialog.object}.getChildObject('CHILD_OBJ_ALIAS_NAME_HERE');
              cObj.destroyChildComponent(cObj);
          EDIT: And as already mentioned having 6 lists in a single component is likely too many.

            Are you sure you are not getting any javascript errors when you try to switch panels?

            How big are these lists in terms of number of records?

            6 lists sounds like a lot, but unless each of them has 1000 + records, it still shouldn't be a big deal.

            As a test, I would want to know how many lists is too many.

            For instance, reduce the components to 5 lists each and see if you still have the same issue. (Then 4, then 3 etc ...)

            You may find that the issue is actually with one of the lists and not about how many there are.

              Also, you may not be able to delete the embedded component, but you CAN empty all the lists ...

              {dialog.object}._listRemoveAllRows('LIST1');

                Thank you all for your assistance. This all makes total sense. Still Learning.

                  In general, break things down into separate components as much as possible. If you can put each list into a separate component - do that. You can load components using Panel OnView (or other) methods rather than using Embedded Component. You can load using Action Javascript rather than using Embedded Component and that could help.

                    This may help you visualize things if needed.
                    Green is my main UX that I navigate to, https://website.com/MainPage.a5w. (Main benefit is that you only open up the components you need. If I want to see orders.a5wcmp, I only pull that data, not 6 lists. Also, create a view to only pull the data needed instead of redundant fields).
                    Yellow is the panelcard I'm putting the orders ux into.
                    Red is a javascript action to open a ux in a panelcard.

                      Thank you so much. I got away from it for a while and I am just now seeing this. Both responses make total sense. I have some work to do :)

                        Start here if you are just showing selectable data from a list of choices - Viewbox is the control.

                          if you are able to use views to just display the needed info I cannot stress enough what good advice that is in terms of speed improvements! If you include the id of the record in the view you can easily make a form to perform an update without loading a detail view and all of its additional functionality and overhead!
