Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Probably more efficient to see if Amazon is having a problem.

I've been checking the status of Amazon all morning as well and Amazon seems fine with no outages.

E mail from Kurt Raynor acknowledges Alpha Cloud applications are down, due to Windows update / changes .
They are currently investigating and working on fixing it.

I seem to have access now to my deployments on Alpha Cloud and no errors.

For those using Alpha Cloud how reliable is it? Is this a rare occurrence? Is there failover methods available? Later this year I need to decide if I'm going to deploy on Alpha Cloud or not. I'd like to hear other developers' experiences who have been using the service for a while.

                    Mike,

This is the first time I can remember that people have mentioned Alpha Cloud being down.
I know Amazon had issues during the last week, and another recent issue before that (It prevented
me from ordering from McDonalds that day).

The biggest thing to remember is the cloud eliminates your server headaches until it's not working.
Then all those headaches come back with the additional headache of telling your clients you have
no idea when services will be restored or even what is being done to restore services).

I'm not having any headaches these days with the classic server.

Thanks, appreciate the insight. What attracts me to Alpha Cloud is, of course, the price point. That said I like having full control over the server and it's operation.

It's kinda nice to be able to tell the boss/client "It's the cloud you wanted it on, I'll be fixed when they get around to it.".
With that said, it's still irritating to not be able to fix the problem or at least assure them service will be restored soon.

As Kurt mentioned in the responses the issue was caused by an aws windows update that broke IIS! As he also mentioned they are stopping the auto deployment of such patches now so they don't get burned again. For me no different to my dev cycle, if something breaks, fix it and prevent it from happening again. Having said that I do wish that Kurt could be cloned to give 24 coverage for those of us not on a US time zone! :-) And of course my clients wish the same of me!!

I have been using Alpha Cloud for two years now, and besides the problems recently with AWS were publishing was affected this is only the second time my actual applications were down. Both times were on the weekend and Kurt was still very responsive and had the issue resolved. I am very happy with Alpha Cloud.
