Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Password Expired

I have security settings to Password Expires and the Expiry Time is 99 Years. This is for all intents, the same as 'does not expire' but by doing this exposes the 'Must change password at first login'.

    Password Expires.jpg

A number of new users accounts were created about 3 months ago and these users are now logging in for the first time.
The problem is, at login, they are being warned that their password has expired. This should not be the case when the expiry time is set to 99 years!

For each of these new users, I have to reset their password. They should just be prompted to change their default password.
Usually my users login shortly after their accounts are created, so this is not something I have ever noticed before.

Is this a bug in the security settings for new user accounts?

Well - looks like a bug - also looks like looking for trouble.. did you do the 99 year thing after the new users were created 3 months ago? If so, I'd say they are not in the 99 club and have expired as the rule come into play after it. Who knows..it says 'The expiration is-recalculated when the password is entered' - - sounds buggy.

No, the 99 year settings has been in place for years, it has never been an issue, so I'm wondering if this is yet another build update induced problem.

What version are you using for this, and do you have to add the 99 years? I don't have any expirations and I don't have any issues. I also use the default Alpha user can change password, and it sends a reset code to their email.

Official build 8000. You have to choose Password Expires if you want to expose the password change on first login.

Keep in mind this has always worked fine for years. The users having password expiry notices were created about 3 months ago when I was at build 7582. I updated to build 8000 a week or so ago, and those users are the ones seeing password expired.

This build has weird issues and I have no doubt that is where the problem comes in. I created 4 new user accounts 2 days ago and the first user logged in without the password expired warning .. they were prompted to change their password as expected.

Updating this software just drives me nuts!

I had 8000 issues, reported them - now seems ok - one was with security, Selwyn did say they make a lot of changes in security in 8000. I'm on nb 8027.

I reported this Pete ... no response.

This is on my production system, so I am extremely hesitant to install a nightly build. If it were only hotfixes might be a different story.

Sorry my bad, I just assumed that when I mention nightly build - its NEVER in a LIVE environment. Here's an example. Fired up my development today - everything was dead, I had to install 2028 to get it going again :(

Then had to roll back to 2027 to get the use of panel cards etc. :(

Yeah, no worries Pete. My development system is not 'exactly' like my production system as it doesn't have an IIS Server, just the built in Developer server.
So even if it works on my development system .. no guarantees it will not cause issues on the production system. I wish I did have an exact duplicate development system, it would make me feel a whole lot better about updates.
