Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Application Server V12 not connecting to outside world

    Raw new user here.

I have Alpha Anywhere v3.11 installed, originally from a free trial which I then purchased a licence for. I also have Application Server version 12 licensed and installed separately.

    My screen looks like this:

    Screenshot 2015-07-01 21.51.08.png

i.e. Development Server (not Application Server) is available from the toolbar.

According to the Susan Hussey Bush tutorial, I should be able to remote test a component *easily*. However I cannot get the remote test URL to connect from another device with either the Development Server started from the toolbar, or the Application Server started from the windows startup menu.

No doubt I've missed something so obvious nobody saw any need to explain it...

    Any suggestions?

    Ken,

When you say "remote test" what are you referring to exactly? You can view your component in Live Preview or Working Preview (Check Mobile option to view in Mobile device within Alpha itself, this is a simulator basically). Alternatively, when you publish your project, you can opt to do a remote test which will allow you to view your project on a mobile device.. Though keep in mind that when you publish and do a remote test, you need to make sure that the device you are using to view is on the same subnet otherwise it won't work (to my knowledge).

Re: Application Server V12 not connecting to outside world

Thanks for the prompt reply Riley. I meant the latter - I am following the tutorial AlphaAnywhere_V12_WebMobile_Vol_1_EDE (Susan Hussey Bush) recommended for new users by my Alpha salesperson. On p133 there begins a description of how to test a component via another device using the Remote Test button on the Alpha toolbar. As everything else in the tutorial is meticulously explained step-by-step, I was assuming that this part would be as easy as it says it is on p135. Your answer and research elsewhere leads me to believe otherwise. I was concerned that I'd misunderstood something basic about running servers (I'm a long way from being a true programmer, just an Access tragic). I can access the URL from a browser on the development machine; there are no others on this particular subnet ;)

I'm still interested to know more about how that example could be made to work as described, but as it's not essential to my personal learning curve I'll move on.

just like riley said, you need to publish to the server.
        let me elaborate further:
your development machine has a local server that will show the content when the alphfive is running.
so create a simple a5w page that says "hello Wallace you are going to be a great alphafive programmer". with out the quote marks.
save it and publish it to local webroot. now go to any browser and view that page.
in your machine it will be localhost:your port number (if different from 80)/your folder name ( if you have any)/your a5w page name
then use terminal and type ipconfig -a it will give you the address of your development machine the one with (127.0.0.somenumber or 192.0.0.somenumber). go to your phone and type
        http://your ip address:your port number/your folder name(if any)/your a5w page with a5w extension.
when you want show someone close to you do the publishing the application server that you installed separately and find out the ip address by what is my ip in the browser and then tell them fire up the phone and look for you.
voila, they will see what you have done.(this does not need alphafive running)

edit: this assumes you have port forwarding enabled to that application server machine.

Re: Application Server V12 not connecting to outside world

What I am missing in the previous posts is that your phone should be on the same WIFI so that your pc/application server and phone share common ip addresses.
For example your pc has 192.168.10.12 then your phone could be on 192.168.10.25
Then it works with the development version

Hey you guys! Getting the correct IP address via ipconfig (no "-a") and connecting the phone to the development machine's WIFI got a result.

            Onward & upward!

            Thanks for the help.

In my previous post, I did state that "when you publish and do a remote test, you need to make sure that the device you are using to view is on the same subnet otherwise it won't work". The verbiage is just a bit different :) Glad you guys got it working though.

              Ciao!
