Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Public Pages with Authenticated Pages mixed

Hopefully this is an easy problem to solve but I like to ask the question in case anyone else has gone down this road and can steer me clear of some hiccups.

I need to build an Alpha application that initially loads a public (non authenticated) set of pages that anyone can browse. Additionally, there needs to be an authenticated portion of the application that existing users can access or new users can register.

If my non authenticated pages allow everyone and then I have a link to login and redirect them to an authenticated portal, is that the basic gist of how to handle this? Just wondering the best approach for this? It seems overkill to use 2 projects, one with no security and one with security with link to the secure project.

    Thanks,
    Jeremy

You can mix Auth pages and non-auth pages in the same app, no problem.

However, sometimes it is better to simply create a website using any available website setup, and then having the link take you to another site (like maybe a subdomain) that is your authenticated portion.

    The advantages of this:
Less traffic hitting Alpha lets the Alpha server handle the important stuff and not get bogged down feeding pages to the general public.
    Ditto for your data source.
Less network traffic on your Alpha server (in case you pay for traffic)
Generally easier maintenance on your public pages as you can likely use a standard web editor for those.

However, if even your public pages are reliant on database information (like a table of names or countries) then there is no reason to not use Alpha for those too.

      Jeremy,

I took the path you are considering. It works well, but it does require you as the developer to handle the public pages vs what Igrupido mentioned....which is a regular website and and second one for the portal. We do have to have a load balancer to handle all the traffic since we have many concurrent users during registration windows where users wait until the last second.

If you are interested in seeing the site......here is the URL:

      https://omea-ohio.org/

I tried to use viewboxes when possible. For example..if you go to the menu item AE and choose any of the submenu items (General information, Creative events, etc)....those are all in ONE viewbox.

The JOBS menu item (Active postings) shows a combination of a list and a viewbox....again, trying to keep things light.

You can see how I handled your question about moving from public to a required login page by going to AE...choosing LARGE GROUP and then click any of the "VIEW" buttons under the graphics (see attached)

Let me know if you have any questions about the pros and cons of this approach.

        Hi Greg,
I really like what you did with your website. I am especially interested in how you used the view box to create the menus, etc. That is something I would like to try.

Do you any basic template for the public portion that you could share?

        Thanks,
        Mike

IADN.COM is an example of an Alpha Anywhere 'website' with both public and authentication-required pages. The site has been around for about twelve years like this but with enhancements over time. It also runs on a load balancer that I modified to work with Alpha applications. The website portion is based on my AlphaToGo Framework. Both the Framework and the Load Balancer are for sale on IADN.COM.
