Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Best non-Alpha software for creating static web pages

I have become very frustrated with AA. I know I am twenty years behind the times, but I still create a5w pages by using tables. I centre the table and make it 90% width and everything is fine. Or more accurately, everything WAS fine. A year or two ago I submitted a video and a bug report as I could no longer edit within cells in a table. Eventually AA accepted this and basically told me there was nothing they could do about it. Having said that, it has marginally improved. I can at least place my cursor in a table cell now. Problem is, if I edit the font or colour of text, ALL of the text in that cell changes - it didn't do this a couple of years ago - fact.

I am now so frustrated that I feel I must give up on AA with regard to adding static pages to my website. So I am forced to go elsewhere. My question is, what software should I buy in order to produce static pages and then import that HTML etc into a5w pages? My site is built in AA and hosted via the Alpha WAS so I am forced to continue with that. Please keep in mind that I am old and stupid and it needs to be a simple process :-)

I don't really understand the problem, but AA does have functionality for plain old html pages.
One of the all around favorite programs for all kinds of coding seems to be Microsoft Visual Studio Code.
Gregg is a great site to test and share sql code

I am not sure if the problem is universal, but AA did acknowledge it. At the time, I was unable to place the cursor in any cell in a table on and a5w page. This still applies to all of my older a5w pages, i.e. I cannot easily edit them. I use tables as it helps me to layout my text and images anywhere on the page. I've never tried to understand containers etc.

Thank you for the advice - I will take a look at MS Visual Studio and see how I get on

You can create HTML pages right inside Alpha. You don't have to have it in a A5W page.

Another option is creating HTML in a UX (inside a static text control). Then place that UX into an A5W page.

Someone already mentioned Visual Studio. That's what I use for debugging, HTML, and CSS work.

You can adjust the generated html code using the Source tab although I recall switching tabs used to sometimes corrupt the html so keep a backup.
As others have mentioned visual sudio community and also visual studio code (both free subject to use) can be used but not sure if WYSIWYG editing available

Thanks Mike, I had a quick look at the UX option but quickly realised I'm going to have to spend some time on it.

Thanks also to Mumfie. It's not so much a problem creating the HTML, especially with the WYSIWYG editor. My problem is positioning the various blocks of text and images in different parts of the page. This was very simple utilising tables with multiple rows/columns/cells that I could individually format with ease. This facility no longer works for me, as confirmed by Selwyn. Here is his message from last year:

i was able to duplicate the behavior you are seeing. we used to use and old Microsoft control for editing HTML (this control had a lot of other problems and it was based on Internet Explorer)
while it had other problems, it worked OK for you.

we switched from using the Microsoft control to using Chrome. while that did fix a lot of the problems we had, it has apparently broken the HTML editor for you.
there is no short term solution to this OTHER than editing your page in source mode. (or using an external html editor)

He did mention an external editor.
The most popular one in the coding world seems to be Visual Studio Code.

I had a quick look at Visual Studio Code yesterday, but it will obviously need more time. But before I get involved in it, can I just ask: apart from producing the basic HTML, will it give me control of the page layout?

If you're just looking for something to replace the table, to lay things out on the page, you might want to check out this link

That looks interesting - thanks very much. I shall explore it further

I think the easiest way is just to install the latest version of Alpha that has the old Microsoft control working and also update the server to the same version.

Have a look at MOBIRISE free and may have whst you want Larry.

Thanks KK, why didn't I think of that? Great idea, thanks!

Hi Ted, funnily enough I added Mobirise 'sliding' code to my landing page some years ago. But I didn't realise that they were offering a website builder as well. It looks good - thanks

Click on the Hybrid Apps link on my signature, Larry. Thats Mobirise.

Thanks very much Ted. Problem is, I didn't know where to find your signature... I had a look at your profile etc. Anyway, I did buy 'Wow slider' from Mobirise about four years ago - I just didn't realise that they did whole page layouts, but I have now downloaded their latest offering.

For the last few days I have been fighting with transferring my SSL to my new WAS server, but I've sorted that now, so its back onto web page development. I'll let you know how I get on
