Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Validation Xbasic

    I this is used, the validation does not occur until you try to submit or run {dialog.Object}.validate();

    If Validation Rules are used, validation occurs as soon as you leave the field in question.

    Is there a way, probably in the onblur event to validate only that field, arther than the complete tab /ux

    Thanks

    Re: Validation Xbasic

    i think onKeyup function to write your own code to meet your need should work.

    http://www.alphasoftware.com/alphafo...-real-time-How
    take a look at this post and my code in post#3
    you can start from there and go to what needs to be done.

      Re: Validation Xbasic

      This is the code I have in the Validation Xbasic
      if e.data.CLIENTTYPE = "PARTNERSHIP" then
      if e.data.PROPOSERPARTNERS = "" then
      validate_PROPOSERPARTNERS.hasError = .t.
      validate_PROPOSERPARTNERS.errorText = "Proposers (other) Partners Names are required"
      end if
      end if
      My java knowledge is very weak so I do not know how convert this to java and add to the on key up or on blur event
      Thanks

        Re: Validation Xbasic

        the way you have is the right way when you want to take the content of another field and the content of the current field (since the entire content of the current field is available when you tab out) to validate.
        onKeyup event is most often used to verify the content of the field against some value. onBlur event is the same as tabbing out.

          If you use onKeyUp then the code will fire every time you press and release a key. Do you really, really want to do that? I don't think so in this case. onKeyUp is used, for the most part, in progressive searches and for testing specific keys such as "Enter".

          Give this a try for your Validation Javascript...

          Code:
          var clientType = {dialog.Object}.getValue('ClientType');
          if(clientType == "PARTNERSHIP"){
          	if(data == ""){
          		return "Proposers (other) Partners Names are required";
          	}
          }

            Thanks David that cracked it
            a) putting the code in "validation javascript" gets it to fire at the right times
            b) the code has helped me understand how to use this in many other places

              Re: Validation Xbasic

              After more testing it seems "validation javascript" only occurs when the field is entered & then departed. If the field is skipped & the form submitted it does not get validated.
              My work round at the moment is to also apply an Xbasic validation as this only occurs when you submit.
              all a bit long winded unless anyone has any suggestions.
              Thanks

                Re: Validation Xbasic

                It's a matter of understanding exactly what you want to have happen. Field validation can only occur at the field level during interaction with that field. I sometimes put this in, but as you've found, if you don't touch the field, then the code won't necessarily run. I usually put that same javascript into the Submit button so that validation is done before anything goes back to the server. If you can validate at the client, then that's the best process.

                  Re: Validation Xbasic

                  immediate validation written in javascript or in xbasic is just the same.
                  like david says, it is a matter of understanding the events
                  field level validation works if that field is dirty by getting into that field and getting out making a valid data for that field whatever that may be. null or something.
                  on the other hand the entire form is validated when the form is submitted in dialog validate event. they are separate and not interchangeable. you decide what you want then implement accordingly.
                  it is your choice.

                    Re: Validation Xbasic

                    Apart from applying code to other events each control has 3 specific validation methods which operate differently:-
                    Whilst using the setting Client side only
                    "Validation Xbasic" validates only on submit
                    "Validation Rules" validates on control exit and on submit
                    "Validation JavaScript" validates on control exit only NOT on submit
                    I appreciate I could turn on server side but want to avoid the delay
                    Gandhi you are clearly more knowledgable than me, but am I right with my view above?
                    Thanks

                      may be not.
                      I take back what I said in the previous post, xbasic and javascript immediate validation are the same- statement.
